A slow sink is a small job. Several fixtures backing up at once, or water coming up a floor drain when the washer empties, usually means the main line, the pipe that carries everything out of the house to the sewer or the cesspool. Finding which one it is comes first.
What we do
- Kitchen sink lines (grease and food buildup)
- Bathroom sinks, tubs and showers (hair and soap)
- Toilets that clog again and again
- Laundry and floor drains
- Main lines from the house to the public sewer, or to an existing septic tank or cesspool
- Shared stacks in two-families and small apartment buildings
What we don't do
- Cesspool pumping, repair or replacement, or any cesspool work
- Septic system installs (we clear the line to an existing tank; see septic line clearing)
- Storm drains and street sewers, which belong to the town, village or county
How it works
- Find the blockage. One fixture means a branch line. Several fixtures, or the lowest drain in the house overflowing, points to the main.
- Clear it from the right cleanout. A main-line clog is cleared from the main cleanout, not pushed through a sink.
- Tell you the cause. Grease, wipes, roots and broken or sagging pipe all show up differently. A line that keeps clogging after it's cleared usually needs a sewer line repair.
Sewer, cesspool or septic: why it matters
Long Island is split. Nassau County says its two treatment plants, Bay Park and Cedar Creek, process 85% of the sewage collected in the county, and most of the South Shore is sewered, while large parts of the North Shore still use cesspools and septic systems. In Suffolk, much of our area is outside any county sewer district. Suffolk County says about 250,000 of its cesspools pre-date its 1973 rule requiring septic tanks on new construction.
On a sewered street, a main-line backup is usually your own line between the house and the street. On a cesspool or septic system, it can be the line or the system itself. We clear the house line first so you know which it is. If the line is clear and water still won't go down, the cesspool or septic system is full or failing, and that's a job for a cesspool or septic contractor.
