In most of Long Island's sewered towns, a main-line clog is a pipe between the house and the street. In Brentwood, the main line usually ends in the yard, at a cesspool or a septic tank. That makes the first question on a drain call different here: is it the line, or the system? For more on the hamlet, see our Brentwood page; for how we clear drains everywhere, see drain cleaning.

Why Brentwood drains are different

Laying Suffolk County's sewer-district map over the Census boundary shows essentially none of the Brentwood CDP inside an active county sewer district. The county's sewer project for Brentwood (CP 8112) covers the commercial area around the LIRR station, Suffolk Avenue, Brentwood Road and Fifth Avenue, and isn't projected to be finished until 2029. Suffolk County's health department says about 250,000 of its cesspools pre-date its 1973 rule requiring septic tanks on new construction, and about 70% of Brentwood homes were built before 1970, according to the Census Bureau's 2015–2019 survey. Many Brentwood houses still drain to an original cesspool.

Line or cesspool: how we tell

  • One fixture slow: it's that fixture's drain. A kitchen sink is usually grease; a tub or shower is usually hair and soap.
  • Several fixtures slow, or the lowest drain overflowing: it's the main line or the system.
  • We clear the main line from the house. If water then goes down normally, the problem was the line. If the line is clear and water still backs up, the cesspool or septic system is full or failing. That's the point where a cesspool or septic contractor takes over; we don't pump, repair or replace cesspools, and we don't install septic systems.

A lot of people on one line

The 2020 Census counted 62,387 people in 13,658 Brentwood households, about 4.6 people per household. The Census Bureau's 2015–2019 survey found 9% of homes are two-family houses. More showers and more laundry put more grease, soap and lint into the same main line, so kitchen and laundry lines clog more often. Scrape greasy pans into the trash, keep wipes out of toilets, and use a lint trap on the washer discharge if you have a laundry tub.

If your street gets sewers

If your property ends up in the county's downtown sewer area, the house will need a new connection from its drains to the street. We do sewer hookups. Closing the old cesspool is separate work by a cesspool contractor.

Numbers to keep handy

Brentwood's water comes from the Suffolk County Water Authority; for water in the street or at the curb, call SCWA at (631) 698-9500. If you smell gas, go outside and call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911. For a backed-up drain or a line to the cesspool that won't clear, call us at (631) 644-2084.

Questions

Drain cleaning in Brentwood: FAQ

My drains are slow everywhere and I'm on a cesspool. What now?
We clear the house's main drain. If it's clear and water still won't go down, the cesspool itself is likely full or failing, and that's a job for a cesspool or septic contractor. We don't do cesspool work.
How do I know if I'm on a sewer?
In Brentwood, assume a cesspool or septic system unless you're in the downtown commercial area the county is sewering. Suffolk County's Department of Public Works, which runs the county sewer districts, can confirm for your address.
The washer drain overflows into the laundry tub. Is that the main?
Often. The washer dumps a lot of water at once, so it's the first thing to show a slow main line or a full system.
