Smell gas? Leave the house first. National Grid, the gas utility on Long Island, says to go outside and call 1-800-490-0045 or 911, and not to touch light switches, phones or anything that could make a spark. Call us after National Grid says it's safe.

What we do

  • Gas piping from the meter to ranges, dryers, water heaters and other gas appliances
  • New gas piping for oil-to-gas conversions
  • Gas lines for new or moved appliances during kitchen and laundry remodels
  • Repair of leaking or damaged gas piping on your side of the meter, once the utility has made it safe

What we don't do

  • The gas service and meter outside the house, which belong to National Grid. National Grid lists a separate line for new service, gas pipe installations and natural gas conversions: 1-877-696-4743.
  • Oil delivery or selling oil, and oil boiler repair
  • Vent cleaning or duct cleaning

How it works

  • Size the piping. Every appliance needs a pipe big enough for its gas demand at the same time as the others. Adding a gas dryer or water heater to an old line can starve the rest.
  • Run and support it properly, with a shutoff at each appliance.
  • Pressure-test it before anything is connected and lit.

Oil to gas on Long Island

A lot of our area still heats with oil, and every switch to gas needs new piping. The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey shows 73% of Levittown homes heating with fuel oil, 53% in East Meadow, 45% in West Babylon and 40% in Hicksville, against 14% in the Village of Hempstead. When a house switches, the gas line to the new heating equipment is usually only part of the job: if the old boiler made the hot water, the house needs a water heater and a gas line to it too, and many people add a gas range or dryer at the same time.

Questions

Gas Line Installation & Repair FAQ

Who do I call if I smell gas?
Leave the house first. Then call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911. Don't use switches or phones inside.
We're switching from oil to gas. What do you do?
We run the gas piping inside the house to the new equipment and to any other gas appliances you're adding. National Grid handles the gas service to the house. We don't sell or deliver oil.
Can I add a gas dryer to my existing line?
Often, but the line has to be big enough for everything on it running at once. We check the size and the run before connecting anything.
