The sewer line, or house sewer, is the pipe that runs from your house to the public sewer in the street. When it's cracked, sagging or full of roots, drains back up again and again no matter how often they're cleared. A lot of Long Island's housing went up in the 1950s, so many of these lines are about 70 years old.
What we do
- Repair or replace cracked, broken, collapsed or sagging sections of the house sewer
- Clear and repair lines invaded by tree roots
- New hookups from the house to the public sewer, including when a street gets sewers for the first time
- Re-route house drains to a new sewer connection
What we don't do
- Cesspool pumping, cesspool abandonment or any other cesspool work. When a home connects to a new sewer, closing the old cesspool is separate work by others.
- Septic system installs
- Repairs to the public sewer main, which belong to the sewer district
How it works
- Rule out a simple clog. We clear the line first. If it backs up again soon after, there's usually a physical problem: roots, a break or a belly in the pipe.
- Find where the problem is. Your side of the connection is your responsibility; the main is the district's. We tell you which side the problem is on.
- Repair the section or replace the line. Then we run water through the whole system to make sure it drains.
When a street gets sewers
New sewers are still coming to parts of our area, mostly in Suffolk. Suffolk County's Brentwood project targets the commercial area around the LIRR station, with completion projected for 2029. In Huntington Station, the county's sewer zone along New York Avenue expects connections to start in 2028, and owners will have to connect within a year. In West Babylon, the county's proposed capital program includes the Carlls River 107-1 project. When your street is ready, the new connection runs from your house drain to the street lateral. We do that hookup. Abandoning the old cesspool is a job for a cesspool contractor.
In Nassau County, where most of the South Shore is already sewered, public sewers are run by the county's sewage district (Bay Park and Cedar Creek plants) or by a village or local district. Nassau County's Department of Public Works handles sewer permits (516-571-6840) and lists the SUEZ hotline, 866-224-8508, for problems in the county sewer.
