Public water on Long Island has to meet federal and New York State standards, and suppliers report what they find every year. A home filter is a choice, not a requirement. If you want one, it should be picked for what's actually in your water, not for what a sales pitch says.
What we do
- Install whole-house filtration on the main water line
- Install under-sink filters for drinking and cooking water
- Iron filtration where the water report or your fixtures show iron staining
- Replace and re-plumb old filter housings and bypass valves
What we don't do
- Water testing in a lab (your supplier's annual report and a certified lab are the sources for that)
- Work on the public water system or treatment plants
How it works
- Start with your water report. Every supplier publishes an annual water quality report. It shows what was detected and at what levels.
- Pick a filter certified for that contaminant. Different filters remove different things.
- Install it where it does the job: at the main line for the whole house, or under the sink for drinking water, with a bypass so it can be serviced.
What Long Island water reports show
New York set a maximum contaminant level of 1.0 part per billion for 1,4-dioxane in 2020, and many Long Island suppliers are building treatment for it. The Village of Hempstead's 2025 report shows 1,4-dioxane at 0.085 to 14.2 parts per billion and says the village operates under a state deferral while it builds advanced oxidation treatment for seven wells. The Hicksville Water District runs advanced oxidation at seven plants, and its 2025 report shows 1,4-dioxane from not detected to 0.28 parts per billion.
Iron is the other common complaint. The Village of Freeport says its water met every standard except iron, which it calls naturally occurring and aesthetic. The Suffolk County Water Authority's 2026 report marks iron above the 300 microgram-per-liter standard at times in its Distribution Areas 1 and 12. Orange staining on fixtures or laundry is the sign; an iron filter sized to the report can help.
