Freeport has one of the oldest housing stocks on the South Shore and a lot of apartment buildings from the early 1960s. Both show up on drain calls. See also our Freeport page and drain cleaning across Long Island.
Old houses, old drains
Freeport incorporated as a village in 1892, and by 1937 it was the largest village in Nassau County, according to Wikipedia. The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey shows 33% of homes built before 1940 and 64% before 1960, with a median year built of 1953. In houses that old, drain lines are often a mix of original pipe and decades of repairs. Rough or shifted joints catch grease and paper, so a kitchen or main line that clogs again soon after it's cleared often has a pipe problem underneath. See sewer line repair in Freeport.
Apartment stacks
29% of Freeport homes are in buildings with five or more units, the survey shows. Wikipedia notes so many apartment buildings went up in the early 1960s that the village passed a moratorium on new multi-unit construction. In those buildings the drain stacks are shared, so one unit's grease or wipes can back up several apartments. A stack clog has to be cleared from a cleanout at the right level, not from one sink.
Village sewer, county treatment
Freeport keeps its own sanitary sewer system, which flows into Nassau County's system for treatment. Nassau County's health department lists Freeport Village, at 46 North Ocean Avenue, (516) 377-2379, as the local sewer authority. For a problem in the street, call the village's Water & Sewer superintendent at that number. For the line from your house to the street, call us.
After a storm surge
About 42% of the village is in FEMA's high-risk flood zone. When storm water overloads the system, sewage can come up the lowest drain in the house. If that happens, stop running water and keep away from it. Once it's cleared, ask about a backwater (sewer check) valve, which closes if the sewer backs up. We install them, and in Freeport the work needs a village plumbing permit.
Bigger households on old lines
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey puts the average Freeport household at 3.12 people, with 62% of homes having three or more bedrooms and 29% having four or more. 63% of homes are single-family detached and 71% are owner-occupied. A full house on a 1950s drain line means more laundry lint, grease and paper going through pipe that was laid for a smaller household. If your kitchen or laundry line is the one that keeps slowing down, that's usually why.
