By 1951, Levitt & Sons had built 17,447 homes in and around Levittown, and most of them are still standing. That's thousands of drain systems the same age, laid out the same way, with the same weak points. See also our Levittown page and drain cleaning across Long Island.
Seventy-five-year-old drains
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 17,300 homes in Levittown. 85% were built in the 1940s or 1950s, the median year built is 1952, and only 5% went up after 1980. 93% are single-family detached houses and 92% are owner-occupied. A drain line from 1950 that hasn't been replaced is about 75 years old. Lines that age catch grease and paper at rough joints, and roots get in where joints have shifted.
No basement, different symptoms
In a slab house, the main drain runs under or through the slab to the street. There's no basement floor drain to overflow first, so a main-line clog usually shows up at the lowest fixture: the tub or shower fills when the toilet is flushed or the washer drains. Many Levitt houses have also been expanded into the attic or out the back, so newer bathrooms tie into original lines. When an added bathroom upstairs drains slowly, the problem is often where it joins the old line.
Sewer, not cesspool
Levittown is inside Nassau County Sewer District No. 3, which runs from Freeport to the Suffolk line and drains to the Cedar Creek plant on the Wantagh–Seaford border. A backup here is your house line to the street or the county main, not a full cesspool. If only your house backs up, it's usually your line. If neighbors have it too, call the county's SUEZ hotline, 866-224-8508.
Big houses, busy lines
The survey shows 86% of Levittown homes with three or more bedrooms and 47% with four or more, and an average of 3.07 people per household. Many of those bedrooms were added later, and more people means more laundry and more showers through the same 1950 main. Laundry lint and kitchen grease are the most common clogs we'd expect in a house like that.
Numbers to keep handy
For a problem in the county's sewer, Nassau County's Department of Public Works lists the SUEZ hotline, 866-224-8508, and a 24-hour emergency sewer service line, (516) 571-6900. For water at the curb, the Town of Hempstead Department of Water is at (516) 794-8300. For your own drains and your line to the street, call us at (631) 644-2084.
County permits for street work
Nassau County's Department of Public Works lists separate phone lines for Sewer Permits and Road Opening Permits, both (516) 571-6840. Work on your own drain lines inside the house and yard doesn't involve the county; a repair that reaches the connection under the street is a bigger job, which is why we clear and check the line first.
