In the Village of Hempstead, a clogged drain is often somebody else's clog too. Almost half the homes are in buildings with five or more units, so stacks and mains are shared. Clearing the right section, from the right cleanout, is most of the job. See also our Hempstead page and drain cleaning across Long Island.
Who uses the line matters
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 18,700 homes in the village: 44% single-family detached and 44% in buildings with five or more units, with 47% owner-occupied. Households are large: the survey puts the average at 3.37 people, and 3.75 in owner-occupied homes. Many people and many units on one drain stack means more grease from more kitchens and more wipes from more bathrooms going into the same pipe.
Village sewer or your line?
The village runs its own public sewer system. Nassau County's health department lists the Village of Hempstead as the sewer authority for the village, separate from the county's own district, and the village FAQ says to call its Sewer Department first when the sewer backs up, at no charge. The village maintains the collection mains. If it finds the main clear, the clog is in your building's line to the street, and we clear it.
How we clear a Hempstead drain
- One fixture backing up: that fixture's branch, usually grease in a kitchen line or hair in a tub.
- Several units backing up at the bottom of the building: the blockage is below where their drains join, in the stack or the main. It has to be cleared from a cleanout, not from one sink.
- The same line clogs again soon: older piping is a likely cause. 19% of village homes were built before 1940 and 55% before 1960, so many drain lines are original or patched. A section that keeps catching waste may need repair. See sewer line repair in Hempstead.
Landlords and tenants
Only 47% of homes here are owner-occupied, so many drain calls start with a tenant. If you rent, tell your landlord or super. If you own the building, a note to tenants about grease and wipes prevents more clogs than anything we do.
Density means busy mains
The village has about 59,000 people in 3.7 square miles, roughly 15,000 per square mile, almost four times the density of Garden City next door, according to Wikipedia. That many people on each block means a lot of flow through each building's line and each village main. When one building's line is partly blocked, it doesn't take long for a backup to reach the lowest drain.
