The first question on a West Babylon drain call is "sewer or cesspool?" Suffolk County's largest sewer district treats its sewage at a plant in West Babylon, but not every West Babylon street drains to it. See also our West Babylon page and drain cleaning across Long Island.
Which streets are sewered
Laying Suffolk County's sewer-district map over the Census boundary puts about 72% of West Babylon in the Southwest Sewer District (Sewer District 3) and about 6% in the Carlls River Wyandanch district. West Babylon was one of five communities in the county's 2012 study of areas that still lacked sewers, and the county's 2026–2028 proposed capital program includes the Carlls River 107-1 project, which would sewer a triangle of West Babylon along the Southern State Parkway between Straight Path and Lakeway Drive. If you're in that triangle, you're likely on a cesspool today.
How we tell the line from the system
- Sewered house, one fixture slow: that fixture's branch. Kitchen lines are usually grease.
- Sewered house, several fixtures backing up: the main line to the street. We clear it from the main cleanout.
- Cesspool house, several fixtures backing up: the line or the cesspool. We clear the line first. If it's clear and water still won't go down, the cesspool is full or failing, and that's a job for a cesspool or septic contractor. We don't pump, repair or replace cesspools, and we don't install septic systems.
Suffolk County says about 250,000 of its cesspools pre-date its 1973 rule requiring septic tanks on new construction. With a median year built of 1961 for West Babylon homes, according to the Census Bureau's latest five-year survey, many unsewered houses here still have original cesspools.
Storm-season backups
About 9% of West Babylon is in FEMA's high-risk flood zone, mostly at the south end. When storm water overloads a sewer, the lowest drain in a sewered house is where sewage comes in. If backups only happen in storms, a backwater (sewer check) valve on the house line can keep it out. We install them on sewered houses.
Lines that keep clogging
56% of West Babylon homes went up in the 1950s and 1960s. Drain lines that old catch grease and paper at rough joints, and roots get in where joints have shifted. If your main clogs again soon after it's cleared, see sewer line repair in West Babylon.
SCWA water and old pipe
West Babylon homes are on Suffolk County Water Authority water. SCWA says groundwater here is naturally acidic (pH 4.5 to 6.8), so it adds hydrated lime to protect household plumbing from corrosion. In 2026 it replaced about 2,400 feet of aging iron main on Cabot Road, a line it said had broken many times. Water coming up in the street or at the curb is SCWA's job, (631) 698-9500. Water backing up out of your drains is ours.
