West Babylon is home to the Bergen Point Wastewater Treatment Plant, which treats sewage for Suffolk County's Sewer District 3. Most of the hamlet is sewered; some of it is waiting. Both kinds of houses need sewer work. See also our West Babylon page and sewer line repair and hookups across Long Island.

Where the sewers are

Laying Suffolk County's sewer-district map over the Census boundary puts about 72% of West Babylon in the Southwest Sewer District (Sewer District 3), which covers parts of the Towns of Babylon and Islip, and about 6% in the SCCRI Carlls River Wyandanch district. Bergen Point opened in 1981. West Babylon was one of five communities in the county's 2012 study of areas that still lacked sewers, and the county's 2026–2028 proposed capital program includes the Carlls River 107-1 project, which would sewer a triangle along the Southern State Parkway between Straight Path and Lakeway Drive.

Repairs on sewered streets

The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey shows 31% of West Babylon homes built in the 1950s and 25% in the 1960s, with a median year built of 1961. House sewers that age crack, sag and let roots in at the joints. A main line that clears and then clogs again within weeks or months usually has one of those problems. We clear it, find where it is, and repair or replace that section, or the whole line if the damage runs along it.

Hookups when sewers arrive

If the Carlls River 107-1 project or another county project reaches your street, the house will need a new connection from its drains to the public sewer. We do sewer hookups: the new line from the house and the connection at the street. Closing the old cesspool is separate work by a cesspool contractor, since we don't do cesspool work.

Backwater valves near the bay

About 9% of West Babylon is in FEMA's high-risk flood zone, mostly at the south end around Venetian Shores, where the National Weather Service recorded about a foot of water on canal-front properties and roads in January 2016. When storm water overloads a sewer, sewage can come up the lowest drain in a house. A backwater (sewer check) valve on the house sewer line closes when that happens. It only applies to sewered houses. See backwater valve installation.

Permits

West Babylon is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits go through the Town of Babylon's Division of Building.

More flow than the line was laid for

The survey puts the average West Babylon household at 3.14 people, with 72% of homes having three or more bedrooms and 39% four or more. A house sewer laid in the 1950s or 1960s often now carries more bathrooms and more laundry than it did then, and that extra flow is often when a weak joint or root intrusion starts to show.

Questions

Sewer line repair in West Babylon: FAQ

My street is getting sewers. What do you do?
We connect the house to the new sewer, from the house drain to the connection at the street. Abandoning the old cesspool is done by a cesspool contractor.
My main line keeps backing up and I'm on the sewer. Why?
In a house from around 1961, the usual causes are roots or a cracked or sagging section. Clearing it buys time; repairing that section fixes it.
Do I need a backwater valve?
If you're sewered and have drains below street level, or you're on a low street near the water, it's worth considering. We install them.
