In Baldwin, a water heater's life depends on three local things: the water Liberty Utilities delivers, how low the basement sits, and how the house is heated. See also our Baldwin page and water heater repair and installation.

Soft water that wears on metal

Baldwin is on Liberty's Lynbrook system. Its 2026 report on 2025 water lists total hardness of 4.2 to 58.6 mg/L, which is soft, so scale is rarely the problem here. The same report lists a corrosivity index (Langelier) from -6.28 to -0.19. Negative values mean the water tends to dissolve metal rather than leave scale, and that is why Liberty adds caustic soda or lime to raise the pH. Inside a tank, soft, corrosive water uses up the anode rod, the part that protects the steel. On a tank more than a few years old, checking the anode is worth doing.

Iron, held in solution

The report says New York allows the Lynbrook district up to 1,500 parts per billion of iron, above the usual limit, because the district treats with sodium silicate to keep iron dissolved; 13 of its 20 well sites also filter iron out. Some still settles in the bottom of a water heater. Rusty hot water, rumbling and lost capacity follow. Flushing the tank once a year helps, and it's the first thing we check when hot water turns orange.

Basements in the flood zone

By our overlay of FEMA's flood map, about a quarter of the Census Bureau's Baldwin area is in the high-risk flood zone. A heater that has sat in floodwater, especially salt water, needs to be replaced or fully checked before it is relit. When we replace one in a flood-prone basement, we can raise it on a stand or move it to a higher floor where the gas line and venting allow.

Sized to the household

The Census Bureau's latest survey puts the average owner household at 3.30 people and counts 41% of homes with four or more bedrooms. If the last shower is always cold, the tank may be too small, or sediment may be taking up the bottom of it. We check before recommending a bigger one.

Gas, oil and the switch

The survey shows 66% of Baldwin homes heating with gas and 25% with oil. In oil houses the boiler often makes the hot water too. Converting to gas usually means a separate gas water heater and new piping to it; National Grid's Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743. We install the heater and the gas line. We don't repair oil boilers, and we don't sell or deliver oil.

Questions

Water heaters in Baldwin: FAQ

Our water is soft. Why did our tank fail early?
Soft, corrosive water wears out the anode rod faster, and once it's gone the tank itself starts to rust. Checking the anode every few years can extend a tank's life.
Can you move our water heater out of the basement?
Often. It depends on space, venting and the gas line. We look at the house and tell you what's practical.
Why is only our hot water rusty?
Iron settles in the tank. Flushing usually clears it. If cold water is discolored too, call Liberty at 1-877-426-6999.
