Baldwin's median home was built in 1949, and that age shapes almost every drain call here. See also our Baldwin page and drain cleaning across Long Island.
Pipe that has had a long life
By the Census Bureau's latest survey, a third of Baldwin homes went up before 1940, 19% in the 1940s and 23% in the 1950s; fewer than one in ten is newer than 1980. Drain lines from those decades are usually cast iron inside the house and clay tile or cast iron under the yard. Cast iron scales up on the inside until a three-inch pipe has the opening of a two-inch one. Clay lets roots in at every joint. Both give the same symptom: drains that run fine for months, then slow all at once.
Busy houses
The survey puts the average Baldwin owner household at 3.30 people, with a median of 6.7 rooms, and counts 41% of homes with four or more bedrooms. Older houses often gain a bathroom upstairs or in the basement over the years. More fixtures on an old main means more grease, hair and paper in it, and a shorter time between cleanings.
Which drain is it?
- One sink or tub slow: a branch line clog, usually close to the fixture. We clear it from there.
- Toilet gurgles when the washer drains, or the basement floor drain backs up: the main is partly blocked. We clear it from the main cleanout, usually in the basement near the front wall.
- Everything backs up only during storms or very high tides on a low street: that may be the sewer, not your line. The state's NY Rising plan says parts of Baldwin near Parsonage and Milburn creeks flood during ordinary high tides and heavy rain, and four sewer pump stations sit in high-risk flood areas. A cleaning won't fix a sewer that is full. A backwater (sewer check) valve on your house line closes when the street sewer backs up.
What we do
We clear the line with a cable sized to the pipe and pull back what was in it, so you can see whether it was grease, roots or something flushed. If roots come back on the cable, or the line clogs again within weeks, the problem is the pipe itself, and the next step is a repair. Our sewer line repair page for Baldwin covers that.
Keeping it clear
Wipe greasy pans before washing them, keep "flushable" wipes out of the toilet, and put a lint trap on the laundry discharge if it drains into a sink or floor drain. In a house this age, those three habits do more than any drain cleaner. Chemical cleaners can also damage old cast iron and the rubber couplings on replaced sections.
