Two things make a Baldwin emergency different from one a few miles north: water that comes up from the bay along two creeks, and a housing stock where a third of the homes are older than 1940. Our Baldwin page has the full local background, and the emergency plumber page has a general checklist.

When the creeks come up

The state's NY Rising plan for Baldwin says Parsonage Creek on the west side and Milburn Creek on the east carry flood water and storm surge deep into the community, as far north as Merrick Road, Silver Lake Park and Milburn Creek Park. It also says those areas see localized flooding during ordinary high tides and heavy rain, not only in hurricanes. Our overlay of FEMA's flood map on the Census Bureau's Baldwin boundary puts about 26% of that area in the high-risk zone (about 15% in zone AE and 11% in the coastal VE zone, counting the bay water inside the boundary). If you live near either creek, a plumbing emergency can arrive with the weather.

Sewage at the floor drain

The plan counts four of the community's sewer pump stations in high-risk flood areas and notes they can fail when flood-damaged equipment or power loss takes them down. After Sandy, the county's Bay Park plant kept releasing under-treated sewage from November 1 to December 14, 2012, and residents were told to cut back on water going down the drains and to stay away from sewage at manholes and basement drains. If sewage is rising through a floor drain right now: stop running water anywhere in the house, keep children and pets out of the basement, and call. If neighbors on your street have the same problem, the county main is involved; Nassau County Public Works lists a 24-hour sewer service line, (516) 571-6900.

Old pipe gives way

The Census Bureau's latest survey counts 33% of Baldwin homes built before 1940 and another 19% in the 1940s. A house that old may still have galvanized steel supply pipe, which rusts from the inside and tends to split at a threaded joint. When that happens, close the main valve, usually just inside the front wall near the meter, and shut off the water heater's gas or power if the leak is near it.

A full house on the main

The same survey puts the average owner household at 3.30 people and counts 41% of homes with four or more bedrooms. A busy house sends a lot of water down one main drain, so a blockage backs up fast. Stop the washer and dishwasher first.

Questions

Emergency plumber in Baldwin: FAQ

The floor drain is backing up and it's high tide. Is it the tide?
It can be both. A storm tide can load the sewer, and a partly blocked house line makes it worse. Stop using water and call (516) 360-9493. If the street is backed up, call the county at (516) 571-6900. A backwater valve on the house sewer is the long-term fix for tide-driven backups.
My water heater sat in water. Can I turn it back on?
No. Leave it off until it's checked. Floodwater can ruin the burner, gas valve and controls. We test it and repair or replace it.
A pipe split in our 1930s house. What do I shut off?
The main water valve, near where the line comes through the front foundation wall. Then call us. If you can't find or turn the valve, Liberty can shut the curb valve.
