Most Oceanside drain calls come from two things: postwar houses with their original main lines, and a hamlet that was largely built on filled marsh. See also our Oceanside page and drain cleaning across Long Island.

Postwar houses, original lines

The Census Bureau's latest survey puts Oceanside's median year built at 1956. 36% of homes went up in the 1950s, 18% in the 1960s and 19% before 1940. 85% are single-family detached. In many of those houses the cast-iron drains inside and the main under the yard are the ones the builder put in. Cast iron narrows as scale builds on the inside, and clay or cast-iron mains let roots in at the joints.

Lines in filled ground

Wikipedia's history says Oceanside grew south from the early 1900s to the late 1970s by building over swamps and marshes. Pipe laid in filled, wet ground can settle unevenly over decades. A low spot, or "belly," holds water and lets paper and grease settle there, so the main clogs at the same place again and again. If we keep finding the blockage at the same distance from the cleanout, that is usually why.

Storm tides and slow drains

Our overlay of FEMA's flood map puts about half of the Census Bureau's Oceanside area in the high-risk flood zone. On low streets, a storm tide or heavy rain can fill the sewer for a few hours. During that time every drain in the house may be slow, and the basement floor drain may back up, even with a clear line. If the drains recover on their own once the storm passes, the cause was the sewer. If they stay slow, it's your line. A backwater (sewer check) valve on the house sewer closes when the street sewer backs up.

What we do

We clear from the right access point: the fixture for a single slow drain, the main cleanout for a whole-house backup. We bring the cable back so you can see what it hit. Grease means a kitchen habit; roots or a repeat clog at the same spot mean the pipe needs attention, which our Oceanside sewer line page covers.

Habits that help

With an average owner household of 2.89 people, the survey's figure, most Oceanside houses don't overload their drains. The usual culprits are grease from the kitchen, wipes in the toilet and lint from a washer that drains into a laundry tub. Keep those out and a sound main can go years between cleanings.

Questions

Drain cleaning in Oceanside: FAQ

The main clogs at the same spot every year. Why?
Often a sag or a root-prone joint at that point. Clearing it works for a while; repairing that section ends it.
Our drains are slow only during storms. Should we call?
If they clear up afterward, the sewer was full, not your line. If sewage comes up through the floor drain, call us, and ask about a backwater valve.
Do you cover Harbor Isle and Point Lookout?
Yes, both are served from our Oceanside page, with the same 24/7 call line.
