More West Babylon homes heat with oil than with gas, and that's the biggest thing shaping its water heater work. The local water and the south end's flood risk matter too. See also our West Babylon page and water heater repair and installation.

Still mostly on oil

The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey shows 45% of West Babylon homes heating with fuel oil, 40% with utility gas and 10% with electricity. In an oil-heated house, hot water often comes from the boiler, through a coil or an indirect tank. When a house switches from oil to gas, that usually means a new gas water heater and properly sized gas piping to it. We do the water heater and the gas line work. We don't repair oil boilers, and we don't sell or deliver oil.

Sized for the household

The survey counts 72% of West Babylon homes with three or more bedrooms and 39% with four or more, a median of 6.3 rooms, and an average of 3.14 people per household (3.29 in owner-occupied homes). If you run out of hot water, the tank may be undersized for the household or losing capacity to sediment. We check first, then size any replacement to the people and bathrooms.

SCWA water and your tank

West Babylon is on Suffolk County Water Authority water, in what SCWA's index calls Distribution Area 1. SCWA says groundwater here is naturally acidic (pH 4.5 to 6.8), so it adds hydrated lime to protect household plumbing. Its 2026 report shows average total hardness of 36.5 mg/L in Area 1, which is soft, across more than 1,000 tests. The same table marks iron above the 300 microgram-per-liter standard at times, with readings up to 963 and an average of 218. Iron and sediment settle in the bottom of a water heater. Flushing the tank now and then helps, and rusty water only from the hot side points to the tank.

After a surge

About 9% of West Babylon, mostly the south end and Venetian Shores, is in FEMA's high-risk flood zone. In January 2016, the National Weather Service recorded about a foot of water on canal-front properties and roads in West Babylon. A water heater that sat in flood water can have a ruined burner, gas control, thermostat or element. Don't relight it or switch it on until it's checked. If you smell gas, leave and call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911.

Gas service for a new gas heater

National Grid is the gas utility on Long Island. For a new gas line from the street or an oil-to-gas conversion, its Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743, weekdays. Inside the house, from the meter to the water heater, the piping is ours.

Questions

Water heaters in West Babylon: FAQ

We're switching from oil to gas. Do we need a new water heater?
If your boiler makes your hot water now, yes. We install the gas water heater and run the gas line to it.
Our hot water is rusty. Is it the heater or SCWA?
If only the hot water is rusty, it's usually the tank. If cold water is discolored too, it may be the supply; SCWA's report shows iron in its Area 1 readings. Call SCWA at (631) 698-9500 about the supply, and us about the tank.
My water heater was in the flood. What now?
Leave it off and have it checked. Flood water can damage the burner, controls and gas valve. Call (631) 644-2084.
