West Babylon is one of the closest Suffolk hamlets to our Merrick Road office. It's also a split place for plumbing emergencies: most of it is sewered, part isn't, and the south end sits on the bay. The right first move depends on which part you're in. See our West Babylon page for the full local picture and the emergency plumber checklist.
Sewer or cesspool decides the backup
Laying Suffolk County's sewer-district map over the Census boundary puts about 72% of West Babylon in the Southwest Sewer District (Sewer District 3) and about 6% in the newer Carlls River Wyandanch district, roughly 78% in all. The Bergen Point plant that treats Sewer District 3's sewage is in West Babylon itself; it opened in 1981. The rest of the hamlet is on cesspools or septic systems.
On a sewered street, a backup is usually your line between the house and the street. On a cesspool, it can be the line or the cesspool itself. Either way, stop running water and call (631) 644-2084. We clear the house line first. If you're on a cesspool and the line is clear, the cesspool is full or failing, and that's a job for a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work.
The south end floods
About 9% of West Babylon is in FEMA's high-risk flood zone, mostly at the south end and around Venetian Shores. In Superstorm Sandy, the National Weather Service reported that most of the area south of Montauk Highway from Amityville to Islip was completely inundated, and smaller storms still push water up the canals: about a foot on canal-front properties and roads in January 2016. After a surge, don't relight a water heater, boiler or gas appliance that sat in water. If you smell gas, leave and call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911.
Water: SCWA for the street
West Babylon homes are on Suffolk County Water Authority water. For a leak in the street or at the curb, call SCWA at (631) 698-9500. In 2026 SCWA replaced about 2,400 feet of aging iron main on Cabot Road, a line it said had broken many times. For anything on your side of the meter, call us.
1950s and 1960s houses
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey shows 31% of West Babylon homes built in the 1950s and 25% in the 1960s, with a median year built of 1961. Original piping in houses that age is where burst-pipe and leak calls usually start. Know where your main shutoff is.
Full houses
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey puts the average West Babylon household at 3.14 people, with 72% of homes having three or more bedrooms and 39% four or more. When the only main line backs up in a full house, everybody is out of a bathroom, so a backup here is worth a call right away rather than waiting it out.
