Hicksville is in the middle of a long switch from oil to gas, and that changes how many of its houses make hot water. Here's what the town's houses and water mean for your water heater. See also our Hicksville page and water heater repair and installation.
Oil to gas, and the hot water
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey shows 50% of Hicksville homes heating with utility gas and 40% with fuel oil. In an oil-heated house, hot water often comes from the boiler, through a coil or an indirect tank. When a house converts to gas, that usually means a new gas water heater and properly sized gas piping to it, plus any gas range or dryer you add. We do the water heater and the gas line work. We don't repair oil boilers, and we don't sell or deliver oil.
Sized for the household
The survey counts 86% of Hicksville homes with three or more bedrooms and 43% with four or more, a median of 6.4 rooms, and an average household of 3.27 people. If you run out of hot water, the tank may be too small for the household or may have lost capacity to sediment. We check first, then size any replacement to the people and bathrooms it serves.
Hicksville Water District water
The Hicksville Water District has served the community since 1921 and pumps from 14 wells in the Magothy aquifer, according to its 2025 Drinking Water Quality Report. The district adds sodium hydroxide to raise the pH and reduce corrosion of mains and in-house plumbing; its report shows pH of 7.6 to 8.2. It also runs air stripping, carbon (GAC) and advanced oxidation treatment at most of its plants. Total hardness was 22.6 to 67.4 mg/L, which is soft to moderately soft, so heavy scale is less of a problem here than sediment. A tank that rumbles while it heats, or hot water that's cloudy or rusty, is worth flushing or checking.
Basement installs in 1950s houses
82% of Hicksville homes were built before 1960, and most are detached houses with basements. The water heater usually sits in the basement near the heating equipment. When a gas heater replaces an oil system, or a new heater replaces an old one, the venting, gas shutoff and relief-valve discharge all have to be right for that space. We check them as part of the install.
Gas service for a new gas heater
National Grid is the gas utility on Long Island. For a new gas line from the street or an oil-to-gas conversion, its Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743, weekdays.
