Two things set Levittown water heaters apart: where they sit, and what heats the house. Most Levitt houses have no basement, and most still heat with oil. See also our Levittown page and water heater repair and installation.
Three in four homes on oil
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey shows 73% of Levittown homes heating with fuel oil and 21% with utility gas. In many oil-heated houses, the boiler also makes the hot water, through a coil or an indirect tank. When a house switches from oil to gas, that usually means a new gas water heater and new gas piping to it, often along with a gas range or dryer. We do the water heater and the gas line work. We don't repair oil boilers, and we don't sell or deliver oil.
Tight spaces in slab houses
Levitt & Sons built on concrete slabs with no basement, and the 1949 ranch models were heated with radiant pipes in the slab, according to Wikipedia. Without a basement, the water heater sits in a utility room, closet or garage, usually a tight fit next to the heating equipment. A replacement has to fit the space, the flue and the gas or electric supply that's there, and its relief valve has to discharge somewhere safe. We plan around all of that before the old tank comes out.
Sized for the household
The survey counts 86% of Levittown homes with three or more bedrooms and 47% with four or more, with a median of 6.6 rooms and an average of 3.07 people per household. Many of those rooms are later dormers and extensions, sometimes with an added bathroom. A heater sized for the original two-bedroom house may not keep up with the house it's in now. We size a replacement to the people and bathrooms, not to the old label.
Town of Hempstead water
Most of Levittown is on the Levittown Water District, established March 24, 1949, and run by the Town of Hempstead Department of Water. The town's 2025 report says its districts draw from 29 wells in the Magothy formation, 487 to 741 feet deep, nine of them in Levittown. It says the pumped water is naturally acidic, so the town adds lime to cut corrosion in household plumbing, adds a blended polyphosphate at three sites to prevent rusty water, and flushes mains every year to clear settled iron. Iron and sediment are what collect in a tank here; flushing the heater from time to time helps.
Gas service for a new gas heater
National Grid is the gas utility on Long Island. For a new gas line from the street or an oil-to-gas conversion, its Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743, weekdays. Inside the house, from the meter to the water heater, the piping is ours. If you ever smell gas, go outside and call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911.
