Most Brentwood emergency calls come down to three things: drains that back up on a street with no sewer, water running where it shouldn't, and a busy house that's suddenly out of hot water. Here's what's different about each one in Brentwood, and who to call for the parts that aren't ours. For the general checklist, see our emergency plumber page; for everything else in the hamlet, see the Brentwood page.
A backup on a street without sewers
Laying Suffolk County's sewer-district map over the Census boundary shows essentially none of the Brentwood CDP inside an active county sewer district; the only overlap is a sliver of the Hauppauge Industrial Sewer District. The county's sewer project, CP 8112, targets the commercial area around the LIRR station, Suffolk Avenue, Brentwood Road and Fifth Avenue, with completion projected for February 2029. So for almost every Brentwood house, sewage goes to a cesspool or septic system in the yard.
That changes the emergency. When every drain in the house stops at once, it's either the line from the house or the system itself. Stop running water, including the washer and dishwasher, and call (631) 644-2084. We clear the house line first. If the line is clear and water still won't go down, the cesspool is full or failing. That part is a job for a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work.
Big households, heavy use
The 2020 Census counted 62,387 people in 13,658 households in Brentwood, about 4.6 people per household. A household that size runs a lot of water through one main line and one water heater, so a slow drain or a tired tank turns into an emergency faster than it would in a two-person house. If the hot water quits, check whether a gas heater's pilot is out or an electric heater's breaker has tripped before you call; if the tank is leaking, close the cold-water valve on top.
Water and gas: who to call
Brentwood is on Suffolk County Water Authority water. For a leak in the street or at the curb, call SCWA at (631) 698-9500. For anything on your side of the meter, call us. If you smell gas, leave the house first, then call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911. With 51% of Brentwood homes heating with utility gas, according to the Census Bureau's 2015–2019 survey, that's a call more households here need to know.
Houses from the 1950s and 1960s
That same survey found 24% of Brentwood homes built in the 1950s and 34% in the 1960s, with a median year built of 1964. Original supply piping and fittings in houses that age are where burst-pipe and leak calls usually start. Know where your main shutoff is, usually where the water line comes in just after the meter, and make sure it turns.
