Hicksville is a neighborhood of detached 1950s houses, and many of its plumbing emergencies involve pipes that have been in service for about 70 years. Here's what to do, and who to call for the parts that aren't ours. See our Hicksville page for the full local picture and the emergency plumber checklist.
The 1950s house
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 13,600 homes in Hicksville: 93% single-family detached, 86% owner-occupied, with a median year built of 1955. 58% were built in the 1950s alone, 82% before 1960, and only 9% after 1980. In a house that age, the usual emergencies are a main drain line backing up into the basement and an old supply pipe or fitting letting go. Know where your main shutoff is, usually on the basement wall where the water line comes in, just after the meter, and make sure it turns.
Main line backups
Nassau County's health department lists the county's Department of Public Works as Hicksville's sewer authority. When sewage comes up a basement floor drain, stop running water everywhere in the house. If only your house is affected, the blockage is almost always in your line between the house and the street. If neighbors are backing up too, the problem may be in the county main: the Department of Public Works lists the SUEZ hotline, 866-224-8508, for all sewer-related issues.
Water: call the district for the street
Hicksville's water comes from the Hicksville Water District, which has served the community since 1921 and pumps from 14 wells in the Magothy aquifer, according to its 2025 report. For a water main break or a leak in the street, call the district's 24-hour line: (516) 931-0184. For leaks, clogs or no hot water on your side of the meter, call us.
Gas safety
The survey shows 50% of Hicksville homes heating with utility gas and 40% with fuel oil. Every oil-to-gas conversion adds gas appliances to a house. If you smell gas, leave the house first and call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911. National Grid also lists water leaking continuously from a gas water heater as a gas emergency.
When an oil boiler quits in winter
With 40% of Hicksville homes still heating with oil, a heating failure on a cold night is also a plumbing risk: pipes along outside walls and in unheated spaces can freeze and split. If the heat goes out, open the cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls and let a faucet drip. We don't repair oil boilers. If a pipe does split, shut off the main and call (631) 644-2084; see burst pipe repair.
