Levittown's houses were built fast and built alike, so its plumbing emergencies tend to look alike too. Most Levitt houses sit on concrete slabs with no basement, which changes where water goes when something breaks and where you find the shutoff. See our Levittown page for the full local picture and the emergency plumber checklist.
Water on a slab floor
Levitt & Sons started building in 1947, and by July 1948 it was finishing 30 houses a day, according to Wikipedia's history of the hamlet. The houses sat on concrete slabs, which took a change to the local building code. The 1949 ranch models were heated with hot-water radiant pipes in the slab. In a house like that, a leak doesn't drip into a basement; it shows up as water on the floor, a warm or damp spot, or a hissing sound. Shut the main valve, which in a slab house is usually in the utility room near the water heater where the line comes in, and call (631) 644-2084.
Main line backups
Levittown is inside Nassau County Sewer District No. 3, which drains to the Cedar Creek plant on the Wantagh–Seaford border. Nassau County's health department lists the county's Department of Public Works as the local sewer authority. With no basement, a main-line backup comes up at the lowest fixture, often a tub or shower. Stop running water. If only your house is affected, it's usually your line to the street; if neighbors have it too, call the county's SUEZ hotline, 866-224-8508, which the Department of Public Works lists for all sewer-related issues.
No hot water in an oil house
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey shows 73% of Levittown homes heating with fuel oil and 21% with utility gas. In many oil-heated houses, hot water comes from the boiler. If the boiler is down, hot water may be too. That's a heating-system call; we don't repair oil boilers. If you have a separate gas or electric water heater and it's leaking or cold, that's ours.
Water and gas: who to call
Most of Levittown gets its water from the Levittown Water District, run by the Town of Hempstead Department of Water (516-794-8300). For a main break or a leak at the curb, call the town's water department. For your side of the meter, call us. If you smell gas, leave first and call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911.
Radiant slabs
Wikipedia's history says the 1949 ranch models were heated with hot-water radiant pipes in the slab. In a house that still has them, a warm spot or water on the floor can be the heating loop rather than the plumbing. Either way, shut the water off if it's a supply leak and call us; we'll tell you which it is.
