A Valley Stream drain is often older than the people using it. The village was named in 1843 and incorporated in 1925, and builders like William R. Gibson were laying out streets in the 1920s. See also our Valley Stream page and drain cleaning across Long Island.
Pipe that's 75 to 100 years old
The Census Bureau's latest survey counts about 13,000 homes in the village: 30% built before 1940, 18% in the 1940s and 26% in the 1950s. So roughly three in four went up before 1960. Drains of that age are usually cast iron inside the house. Cast iron rusts from the inside, and the rough scale grabs grease, hair and paper, so the pipe's working diameter shrinks year by year. A kitchen line that clogs every winter is usually that, not something you did.
A second kitchen on the same main
13% of the village's homes are two-family houses, and the survey puts the average household at 3.26 people, with 35% of homes having four or more bedrooms. A second kitchen and bath double the grease and paper going down a main that was sized for one family. If the downstairs tub fills when the upstairs washer drains, the main is partly blocked. We clear it from the main cleanout, not through a fixture.
Soft water, so it's not scale
Most of the village is on Liberty Utilities' Lynbrook system. Its report on 2025 water shows total hardness of 4.2 to 58.6 parts per million, which is soft, and says caustic soda or lime is added to cut corrosion of household plumbing. Soft water doesn't leave the heavy mineral crust that clogs pipes in hard-water areas. In Valley Stream, the usual culprits are grease, wipes, hair and roots in older sewer lines.
When it only happens in a storm
Valley Stream is on public sewers. Nassau County's health department lists the county's Department of Public Works as the sewer authority, and the village isn't one of the six Nassau villages that run their own collection systems. Our FEMA overlay puts about 13% of the village in the high-risk flood zone, mostly low ground along the stream and in the south end. If a basement floor drain backs up only in a downpour or a storm tide, the street sewer may be surcharging. Clearing your line won't stop that. A backwater (sewer check) valve on your house sewer will, and we install them. If the street itself is backing up, call the county's 24-hour sewer line, (516) 571-6900.
When to think beyond clearing
If the main clogs again within weeks, or we pull out roots, the line itself is cracked or has open joints. See sewer line repair in Valley Stream.
