Elmont's drains were sized for postwar families in small capes. Today the same pipes serve households that average more than three and a half people. See also our Elmont page and drain cleaning across Long Island.
More people than the pipes were planned for
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey puts the average Elmont household at 3.65 people, and 3.18 even in rented homes. It counts 75% of homes with three or more bedrooms and 43% with four or more, with a median of 6.3 rooms. Those are big numbers for houses that mostly date from the 1940s (25%) and 1950s (29%). Every extra shower, load of laundry and sink of dishes goes down a main line that's now 70 to 80 years old.
Capes that grew
Wikipedia's history of the hamlet describes the postwar tracts as largely Cape Cods with a brick-veneer ground floor, especially around Dutch Broadway, and older, smaller shingled houses near Belmont Park along Hempstead Turnpike. Many capes have since added a dormer bath upstairs, a finished basement or both. Each addition ties new fixtures into the original drain system. An upstairs tub drains through a long run before it reaches the stack, and a basement bath often sits below the level of the street sewer and depends on the main staying clear.
Two families, one line
11% of Elmont homes are two-family houses. When a shared main slows, the lower unit sees it first: a tub that fills with gray water when the upstairs washer drains, or a basement floor drain that bubbles. Clearing it from the lower unit's sink won't fix it. We clear it from the main cleanout.
Where the water goes
Elmont is on public sewers. Nassau County's health department lists the county's Department of Public Works as its sewer authority. So a backup is either your house line or the county main, never a cesspool. If neighbors are backing up too, call the county's 24-hour sewer service line, (516) 571-6900.
The water itself
Most of Elmont is on the Water Authority of Western Nassau County. Its 2025 report shows total hardness up to about 109 mg/L, moderately hard, and says the Authority adds zinc orthophosphate to coat pipes and cut corrosion. In the part of Elmont on the Franklin Square Water District, the district's report shows total hardness of 36.1 to 42.8 mg/L. Neither is hard enough to scale a drain shut. In Elmont, grease, hair, wipes and roots cause the clogs.
When clearing isn't enough
If the main needs clearing every few months, or the cable brings up roots, the line has an opening. See sewer line repair in Elmont.
