Valley Stream's emergencies come from three things: some of the oldest houses in southwest Nassau, a lot of two-family homes, and low ground along the brook the village is named for. See our Valley Stream page for the full local picture and the emergency plumber checklist.

Find the shutoff before you need it

The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey says 30% of the village's homes were built before 1940 and the median year built is 1951. In a house that old, the main valve is often an original gate valve in the basement where the water line comes through the front wall. Gate valves that haven't been turned in years can seize or snap. Try yours once on a calm day. If it won't close, or it drips at the stem when you turn it, that's worth fixing before a pipe bursts, not during.

One main, two households

About 13% of Valley Stream homes are two-family houses. The survey puts the average household at 3.26 people (3.41 in owner-occupied homes) and counts 74% of homes with three or more bedrooms. Two kitchens, two or more baths and a lot of laundry often share one main drain. When it blocks, the lower unit or the basement floor drain floods first, even if the upstairs tenant caused it. Stop running water in both units, then call.

Low ground near the brook

Robert Pagan picked the village's name in 1843 for the Valley Stream brook that runs through it, Wikipedia says. Our overlay of FEMA's flood map on the Census village boundary puts about 13% of the village in the high-risk flood zone, including a floodway strip along the stream, and another 14% in the moderate-risk zone. In 2012, Sandy's surge flooded Hungry Harbor Road and streets in the southwest corner of Mill Brook. If water is rising in a basement, stay away from outlets and appliances standing in it, and don't relight a water heater or boiler that was under water. Basement floor drains that back up only in heavy rain or a storm tide point to the street sewer surcharging. A backwater (sewer check) valve on the house sewer is the fix, and we install them.

Who to call for what

Most of the village drinks Liberty Utilities water; part of it is on the Water Authority of Western Nassau County. For a break in the street or at the curb, call your supplier: Liberty at 1-877-426-6999 or the Authority at (516) 327-4100. Nassau County's health department lists the county's Department of Public Works as Valley Stream's sewer authority. If the street sewer is backing up, its 24-hour sewer service line is (516) 571-6900, and its SUEZ hotline, 866-224-8508, takes all sewer-related issues. If you smell gas, leave the house and call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911. Everything on your side of the meter and the house line is ours.

After the emergency

Valley Stream requires a village Building Department permit for all plumbing work, including direct replacement of an existing fixture. So a stop-the-leak visit and the permanent repair can be two steps.

Questions

Emergency plumber in Valley Stream: FAQ

The basement floor drain is overflowing and it's pouring rain. Is that my pipe?
Maybe not. If it happens only in heavy rain or a high tide, the street sewer may be surcharging. Stop using water, and call us; a backwater valve keeps it from happening again.
Our main shutoff won't turn. What now?
Don't force it with a wrench; old gate valves can break off. Call your water supplier to shut the curb valve if water is pouring, then call (631) 644-2084.
Water is coming through the ceiling of the downstairs apartment. Who do I call?
Shut off the water to the upstairs bathroom or kitchen if you can find the valves, and call us. We find the source before opening the ceiling.
