Oceanside's sewers belong to Nassau County and drain to the county's Bay Park plant, just west of the hamlet. The pipe from your house to the street is yours, and that's the part we fix. See also our Oceanside page and sewer line repair and hookups.

Who owns what

Nassau County's health department lists the county's Department of Public Works as Oceanside's sewer authority. The main in the street, the pump stations and the plant are the county's. The building sewer, from the house to its connection with the main, belongs to the property. For a problem in the street, Nassau County Public Works lists a 24-hour sewer service line, (516) 571-6900, and a SUEZ hotline, 866-224-8508.

Why lines here fail

  • Age. With a median home built in 1956, by the Census Bureau's latest survey, many house sewers are about 70 years old, often clay or cast iron.
  • Ground. Much of Oceanside was built on filled marshland, according to Wikipedia's history. In wet, filled soil a line can settle, pull apart at a joint or develop a sag that holds water.
  • Older than the median. The same survey counts 19% of homes built before 1940, so a share of the hamlet's house sewers are more than 85 years old and may have been patched more than once.
  • Roots. Street trees and old hedges send roots into clay joints.
  • Salt and storms. Where floodwater has stood over a yard, it can wash soil into a broken joint and speed up a failure.

Before you call

If every drain is slow, stop running the washer and dishwasher, and look for a cleanout cap near the front of the house or in the basement. Knowing where it is saves time when we arrive.

Repair or replace

We clear the line, find the problem and measure its depth before recommending anything. One bad joint or a short sag can be dug up and replaced. A line that is broken, sagging or root-filled along its length should be replaced from the house to the county connection. Permits for the work come from the Town of Hempstead Building Department, and work at the county's connection goes through Nassau County Public Works (sewer permits line (516) 571-6840).

Backwater valves where the map is blue

Our overlay of FEMA's flood map puts about 49% of the Census Bureau's Oceanside area in the high-risk flood zone and about 7% more in the moderate-risk zone. In a storm surge, the street sewer can fill and push back through the lowest drain in the house. A backwater (sewer check) valve on the house sewer closes when that happens. It's simplest to add while the line is open for a repair, and it needs a cleanout so it can be checked and kept clear.

Questions

Sewer line repair in Oceanside: FAQ

My yard has a soft, sunken strip between the house and the street. Is that the sewer?
It can be. A broken or separated sewer line can wash soil away above it. We clear the line and locate the break before anyone digs.
Does the Bay Park plant being nearby affect my house line?
Your house line is yours regardless. What matters for your basement is whether the street sewer backs up in storms; on low streets, a backwater valve is the protection.
Who do I call if the manhole in the street is overflowing?
Nassau County Public Works, at its 24-hour sewer line, (516) 571-6900.
