In Elmont, the most common water heater complaint isn't a broken heater. It's a heater that can't keep up with the household. See also our Elmont page and water heater repair and installation.

Bigger households, same tank

The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey puts the average owner household in Elmont at 3.78 people and counts 43% of homes with four or more bedrooms. 11% of homes are two-family, and those often have one water heater per unit, or one heater serving both. A tank sized for a small cape's original family runs out fast when five people shower in the morning. Before recommending a bigger tank, we check the one you have: a tank half full of sediment holds less hot water than its label says.

Gas is the norm

The survey shows 65% of Elmont homes heating with utility gas and 23% with fuel oil. In a gas house, the water heater is usually a gas tank vented into the chimney or its own flue, and it needs a sound vent connector, a working gas shutoff and a relief valve that discharges where it should. In an oil house, hot water often comes off the boiler; switching to gas then means a separate gas water heater and new piping to it. National Grid's Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743 for a new service or bigger meter. We do the piping and the heater. We don't repair oil boilers, and we don't sell or deliver oil.

What the water does to a tank

Most of Elmont is on the Water Authority of Western Nassau County. Its 2025 report says it raises the pH with caustic soda and adds zinc orthophosphate to coat mains, service lines and household plumbing, and it shows total hardness of up to about 109 mg/L. Moderately hard water leaves some mineral in the bottom of a tank, especially when the heater is set hot. In the part of Elmont on the Franklin Square Water District, the district's report shows total hardness of 36.1 to 42.8 mg/L and a pH of 6.9 to 8.2. Either way, draining a few gallons from the tank's drain valve once a year cuts the sediment that makes a heater rumble and lose capacity.

Two-family houses

With two units, the questions are whether each unit has its own heater, whether each has its own gas line and shutoff, and where each heater vents. We sort that out before replacing anything, so one tenant's heater doesn't leave the other without hot water.

Questions

Water heaters in Elmont: FAQ

We run out of hot water every morning. Do we need a bigger heater?
Maybe. First we check for sediment and a bad dip tube, which both cut usable hot water. If the tank is healthy, we size a new one to your household and bathrooms.
Our water heater rumbles and pops. Is it dangerous?
It's usually sediment boiling under a layer of mineral on the bottom of the tank. Flushing can help; if the tank is old, it may be near the end.
We have a two-family. Should each unit have its own water heater?
It's often simpler for hot water and billing. We look at the gas piping and venting and tell you what fits the house.
