Elmont's houses are mostly 1940s and 1950s capes, many expanded upward, and its households are large. Both shape what a plumbing emergency looks like here. See our Elmont page for the full local picture and the emergency plumber checklist.

Water through the ceiling

After World War II, Elmont filled in with tract homes, many of them Cape Cods with a brick-veneer ground floor, according to Wikipedia's history of the hamlet. A lot of those capes have since gained a dormer with a bathroom upstairs. The tub, toilet and supply lines in that bath sit right over the living room or kitchen ceiling. A failed tub drain, wax ring or supply hose shows up as a stain, then a drip, then a sagging ceiling. Stop using the bathroom, shut its fixture valves or the main, and keep people out from under a bulging ceiling.

A full house on one main

The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey puts the average Elmont household at 3.65 people (3.78 in owner-occupied homes) and counts 43% of homes with four or more bedrooms. 11% of homes are two-family. So when a main drain blocks, it's carrying a lot of water, and it backs up fast, usually into the basement floor drain or the lowest tub. Stop every washer, dishwasher and shower in the house, including the other unit.

Rarely a flood

Wikipedia places Elmont in the Hook Creek watershed, but our overlay of FEMA's flood map on the Census boundary puts none of the hamlet in the high-risk flood zone. Water in an Elmont basement is almost always a plumbing failure: a supply line, a water heater, or a drain backup. That usually means you can stop it at the main valve.

Who to call

  • Your side of the meter, inside the house, drains and water heaters: us, at (631) 644-2084.
  • Water in the street or at the curb: most of Elmont is on the Water Authority of Western Nassau County, (516) 327-4100. Part is in the Franklin Square Water District, (516) 354-0780. Your bill shows which.
  • Sewer backing up in the street: Nassau County's health department lists the county's Department of Public Works as Elmont's sewer authority. Its 24-hour sewer service line is (516) 571-6900, and its SUEZ hotline, 866-224-8508, takes all sewer-related issues.
  • Gas smell: leave the house, then call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911.

A big system nearby

The Water Authority serves about 120,000 people through 234 miles of main, and it counts more meters in Elmont than in any other community it serves. In 2025 it added an emergency generator at its Station 44 in Elmont and finished rehabilitating its Elmont elevated tank. A curb leak on its side is its job; once the water is shut off at the curb, we can fix your side.

Questions

Emergency plumber in Elmont: FAQ

Our living-room ceiling is wet under the upstairs bath. What do I do?
Stop using the bathroom and shut off its water. If the ceiling is bulging, keep people away from it. We find the leak before opening the ceiling, so only a small section has to come down.
The downstairs unit backs up when we run the washer upstairs. Is that an emergency?
Yes. The shared main is partly blocked and will get worse with each load. Stop using water in both units and call (631) 644-2084.
There's water coming up at the curb. Who fixes that?
Your water supplier, for its side of the meter: the Water Authority at (516) 327-4100 or the Franklin Square Water District at (516) 354-0780.
