In most of Central Islip, the main drain doesn't end at a street sewer. It ends at a cesspool or septic tank in the yard, and clearing it is how you find out which one is the problem. See also our Central Islip page and drain cleaning across Long Island.
Clearing the line is the first test
When drains back up in a house on a cesspool, we clear the main line from the house toward the cesspool. If the cable runs free and the line drains, it was a clog: grease, wipes, lint or roots. If the line is clear but water still sits, the cesspool is full or failing. That's work for a cesspool or septic contractor. We don't do cesspool work and we don't install septic systems, but clearing the line first means you don't pay to pump a cesspool when the problem was a clog.
What clogs Central Islip lines
- Laundry lint and soap. The Census Bureau's latest survey puts the average household at 3.99 people, so washers run often. Lint settles in the line and in the cesspool.
- Kitchen grease. It cools and hardens in the pipe, and in a cesspool it forms a layer that seals the walls.
- Roots, in the older clay lines of 1950s and 1960s houses. 21% of the hamlet's homes were built in the 1950s and 22% in the 1960s.
Where the sewers are
Suffolk County's sewer-district map, laid over the Census boundary, puts about 23% of Central Islip's area inside Sewer District No. 3 (Southwest), mostly in the southern half of the hamlet. In December 2024 the Town and State also finished a new sewer line along Carleton Avenue downtown that connects to that district. If your house is on a sewer, a backup is your line or the county's main, and we clear your line. If you're not sure, the county's Department of Public Works can tell you.
Townhouses and newer homes
31% of Central Islip homes were built after 1980, and 16% are townhouses. Newer PVC lines clog less from roots but just as easily from grease and wipes. In a townhouse development, a backup that shows up in more than one unit should be reported to the HOA as well as to us.
When clearing isn't enough
If the same line needs clearing every few months, the pipe itself may be broken, sagging or root-filled. See sewer line repair and hookups in Central Islip.
