Huntington Station is a dense hamlet without much sewer, at least until the county's new zone along New York Avenue opens. For now, most drains here run to a cesspool in the yard. See also our Huntington Station page and drain cleaning across Long Island.

Dense, and mostly on cesspools

Wikipedia counts 34,878 people in the hamlet in 2020, about 6,369 per square mile. That's more like a small city than a typical Suffolk hamlet, yet Suffolk County's sewer-district map, laid over the Census boundary, puts only about 5% of its area inside an active sewer district today. So most houses drain to a cesspool or septic system on a lot that's often not large.

Is it the line or the cesspool?

We clear the main line from the house toward the cesspool. If the line runs free afterward, it was a clog: grease, wipes, laundry lint or roots. If it's clear but water still sits, the cesspool is full or failing, which is work for a cesspool or septic contractor. We don't do cesspool work and we don't install septic systems, but clearing the line first keeps you from paying for a pump-out you didn't need.

What clogs lines here

  • Roots, in the clay lines of older houses. The Census Bureau's latest survey says 27% of homes were built in the 1950s, 21% in the 1960s and 12% before 1940.
  • Kitchen grease, which hardens in the pipe and seals cesspool walls.
  • Laundry. The survey puts the average owner household at 3.12 people and counts 69% of homes with three or more bedrooms.

Townhouses and two-family homes

12% of the hamlet's homes are townhouses and 6% are two-family houses. In a two-family, the lower unit sees a shared-main backup first. In a townhouse development, a backup that shows up in more than one unit should be reported to the HOA as well as to us.

The sewer that's coming

Suffolk County and the Town of Huntington are building a sewer zone of about 229 parcels around the train station and along New York Avenue. Local reports say connections should start in 2028. Until then, a clean main line and a cesspool that isn't overloaded are what keep drains moving. Once your property can connect, we do sewer hookups. See sewer line repair and hookups in Huntington Station.

Soft water

The South Huntington Water District's 2025 report shows total hardness of 2.7 to 54.6 mg/L and iron of no more than 0.062 mg/L. That's soft, low-iron water, so mineral scale isn't what closes drains here.

Questions

Drain cleaning in Huntington Station: FAQ

Our drains back up every few months. Is the cesspool failing?
Not always. A partial clog in the line, often roots or grease, causes the same symptoms. We clear the line and tell you what we found.
Do you pump cesspools?
No, we don't do cesspool work. We clear the line to it and tell you if the cesspool needs a contractor.
When will my street get sewers?
Only the zone around the train station and along New York Avenue is planned; local reports say connections start around 2028.
