Central Islip mixes 1950s and 1960s houses on cesspools with newer townhouse developments, and its households are big. That combination decides what a plumbing emergency looks like here. See our Central Islip page for the full local picture and the emergency plumber checklist.
Backups: the line or the cesspool?
Suffolk County's sewer-district map, laid over the Census boundary, puts only about 23% of the hamlet's area inside Sewer District No. 3, mostly in its southern half. Everywhere else, the house drains to a cesspool or septic system. When every drain in the house backs up at once, there are two possibilities: a blockage in the line between the house and the cesspool, or a cesspool that's full or failing. We clear the house's main line first, which tells you which one it is. If the line is clear and water still won't go down, you need a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work. Suffolk County's health department says that since July 1, 2019, a failed cesspool can't be replaced with another cesspool, so the contractor will talk to you about the options.
Big households, hard-working drains
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey puts the average Central Islip household at 3.99 people, and 4.17 in owner-occupied homes. That's a lot of laundry, showers and dishes going into one line and one cesspool every day. A backup often shows up right after a run of loads in the washer. Spread out the laundry until the problem is fixed.
Townhouses: leaks you can't see
16% of Central Islip homes are single-family attached townhouses, many in developments built since the mid-1990s, when the hamlet saw a wave of new housing. In a townhouse, the water heater and supply lines often sit in a closet next to finished rooms, and a leak can travel into the unit next door. Shut off the water at the main or the heater's cold supply, and if water has reached a neighbor's wall, tell them and your HOA.
Low spots
Our overlay of FEMA's flood map puts about 2.5% of the hamlet in the high-risk flood zone. For most houses, water in the basement is a plumbing failure, not a flood, and closing the main valve stops it.
