Central Islip's water heaters work harder than most: four-person households, iron in the water, and a lot of heaters tucked into townhouse closets. See also our Central Islip page and water heater repair and installation.
Four people per house
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey puts the average Central Islip owner household at 4.17 people, with a median of 5.5 rooms per home. A 40-gallon tank that was fine for a small family runs out quickly when four or five people shower in a row. Before suggesting a larger tank, we check the one you have for sediment and a failed dip tube, which both cut the hot water you actually get.
Heat source decides the heater
The survey shows 56% of homes heating with utility gas, 28% with fuel oil and 11% with electricity. Gas houses usually have gas water heaters. Electric-heat homes usually have electric tanks. In an oil house, hot water often comes from the boiler, and switching to gas usually means a separate gas water heater and new gas piping. National Grid's Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743. We do the heater and the gas line. We don't repair oil boilers, and we don't sell or deliver oil.
Iron in Area 12 water
Central Islip is in the Suffolk County Water Authority's Distribution Area 12. SCWA's 2026 report on 2025 water shows iron in Area 12 from non-detect up to 850 micrograms per liter, with an average of 88, and total hardness from 11.3 to 198.2 mg/L, averaging 72.5. SCWA adds polyphosphates to keep iron in solution, but some of it, and the minerals, still settle in the bottom of a water heater. That's where rumbling, rusty hot water and lost capacity come from. Flushing the tank once a year helps.
Townhouse closets
16% of Central Islip homes are townhouses, and 31% were built after 1980. In those units, the water heater often sits in a closet beside finished rooms or over a slab. A drain pan with a line to somewhere safe, and a relief-valve line that ends where it should, are worth checking. Water from a failed tank there goes into floors and walls, not a basement.
On a cesspool
In most of the hamlet, every drain, including a water heater's relief-valve or drain-pan line if it's piped to a drain, ends up in the cesspool. A heater that keeps dumping water adds load to it, so fix a dripping relief valve rather than ignoring it.
