The Village of Hempstead is dense and old, and a lot of its homes share pipes. That shapes what an emergency looks like here: one backup can hit several apartments, and one leak can come through a neighbor's ceiling. It also means some calls belong to the village before they belong to a plumber. See our Hempstead page for the full local picture and the emergency plumber checklist.
Sewage backing up? Call the village first
The village's own FAQ says that if your sewer backs up, call the Village of Hempstead Sewer Department before a plumber, at no charge. Nassau County's health department lists the village as its own sewer authority, at 99 Nichols Court, (516) 489-3400. The village's Water and Sewer Department maintains the sewer collection mains. If the village finds its main is clear, the blockage is in your building's line, and that's when to call us at (631) 644-2084. Meanwhile, stop running water in every unit: in a building that shares a stack, a neighbor's laundry can push the backup into your drains.
Shared buildings, shared emergencies
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 18,700 homes in the village. Only 44% are single-family detached houses, 44% are in buildings with five or more units, and only 47% are owner-occupied. In a two-family or an apartment building, the drain stack and the main are shared, and so is the water heater in many buildings. If you rent, tell your landlord or super right away; if you own the building, we clear the stack or main from the right cleanout and tell you what caused it.
Old pipes in old buildings
19% of village homes were built before 1940 and 55% before 1960, with a median year built of 1958, the same survey shows. Older buildings often have a mix of original and patched piping. Burst and leaking supply lines in those buildings are often at old fittings and valves. Know where the main shutoff is for your unit and for the building.
Water, gas and who to call
The village pumps its own water from nine wells and runs its own Water Department; for a main break or a leak in the street, call the village. If you smell gas, leave first and call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911. With 72% of village homes heating with utility gas, that number matters here.
Density and shared walls
About 59,000 people live in the village's 3.7 square miles, roughly 15,000 per square mile, according to Wikipedia. In buildings that close together, a burst pipe or an overflowing fixture in one unit often reaches the next one through a shared wall or ceiling. Close the shutoff for the unit with the leak first.
