Freeport's emergencies are shaped by water from two directions: the pipes inside the house, and the bay outside it. A big share of the village sits in FEMA's high-risk flood zone, and when the canals rise, plumbing problems follow. See our Freeport page for the full local picture and the emergency plumber checklist.
When the bay comes in
Laying FEMA's current flood map over the Census boundary puts about 42% of the Village of Freeport in the high-risk (1% annual chance) flood zone, mostly zone AE, with a strip of VE along the water. In Superstorm Sandy, nearly 3,500 Freeport homes had saltwater flooding, according to the mayor's figures reported by Newsday; everything south of Atlantic Avenue flooded, and the Nautical Mile on Woodcleft Canal sat under six to seven feet of water. Smaller storms still reach the streets: the National Weather Service logged 2 to 3 feet of water on roads south of Atlantic Avenue in the December 23, 2022 coastal flood.
After a flood, the plumbing emergency is often what the water touched. A water heater, boiler or gas appliance that sat in flood water can have a damaged burner, controls or gas valve. Don't relight it. National Grid lists water leaking from a gas water heater as a gas emergency; if you smell gas, leave and call 1-800-490-0045 or 911.
Sewage coming up a low drain
Freeport keeps its own sanitary sewer system, which flows into Nassau County's system for treatment. For a sewer problem in the street, call the village's Water & Sewer superintendent at (516) 377-2379. If only your building is backing up, it's usually your line to the street, and that's ours. Stop running water until it's cleared. A backwater (sewer check) valve on the house sewer line closes if the sewer backs up, so sewage can't flow in through basement and utility-room drains; we install them, and in Freeport the work needs a village plumbing permit.
Old houses, shared buildings
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey shows a third of Freeport homes (33%) built before 1940 and 64% before 1960, with a median year built of 1953, and 29% of homes in buildings with five or more units. Old supply piping and shared drain stacks are where burst-pipe and multi-unit backup calls start. Know where your shutoff is, and in an apartment building, where the building's is.
Water in the street
The village runs its own water system: 11 wells, about 10,200 metered connections and 126 miles of mains, according to its 2025 Annual Water Quality Report. For water in the street or a sewer backing up at the curb, call the Village of Freeport Water & Sewer superintendent at (516) 377-2379. If the problem is on your side, call us.
