West Islip has three kinds of houses when it comes to sewers: those already in Sewer District 3, those on cesspools, and those in the area the county plans to sewer next. See our West Islip page and sewer line repair and hookups.

Houses already on Sewer District 3

About 73% of the hamlet's area is in Suffolk County Sewer District 3, by our overlay of the county's map. The Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection says the district was approved by voters in November 1969 and that its Bergen Point plant went online in October 1981. Suffolk Public Works says problems inside the building or between your house connection and the main aren't the county's responsibility, so the lateral is the owner's. With 65% of West Islip homes built in the 1950s and 1960s, by the Census Bureau's latest survey, many laterals are clay or cast iron with roots and sags. We clear, repair or replace them. For a problem in the main, the county's Sewer District 3 emergency line is (631) 854-4150.

Houses on cesspools

Outside the district, the line from the house runs to a cesspool or septic system on the lot. Since July 1, 2019, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services hasn't allowed a failed cesspool to be replaced with another cesspool, so a failing system means a newer kind of system, installed by a cesspool or septic contractor. We don't do cesspool work. We repair and replace the pipe between the house and the system, and clearing it first tells you whether the pipe or the system is the problem.

The planned Carlls – West Islip sewer

The county's 2025 Subwatersheds Wastewater Implementation Plan lists a project (CP 8518) to sewer an area north and east of Arbor Street and Kime Avenue, with about 518 residential connections and construction completion scheduled for December 2028. When the main reaches your street, the house side of the hookup is typically:

  • a new line from the house to the street connection, at the right depth and pitch;
  • rerouting the house drain to leave toward the street, if it now exits toward the backyard cesspool.

We do both. Taking the old cesspool out of service is cesspool work for a separate contractor. If your line to the cesspool is failing before the sewer arrives, it has to be fixed now; we can plan that repair with the future hookup in mind.

Flood streets and backwater valves

Along the canals at the south end, where our overlay of FEMA's map puts most of West Islip's roughly 8% high-risk flood area, a sewered house can see backflow when the street sewer surcharges. A backwater (sewer check) valve on the house sewer closes against it. We install them where the house is on the sewer and the layout allows.

Questions

Sewer line repair in West Islip: FAQ

Is my street in the planned sewer area?
The county's plan describes the area north and east of Arbor Street and Kime Avenue. Suffolk County DPW can confirm a specific address.
Our cesspool failed. Can you replace it?
No. That's cesspool work for a cesspool or septic contractor. We repair the line from the house to the system.
Do we need a backwater valve if we're on a cesspool?
No. A backwater valve protects a house on the public sewer from a street-sewer backup.
