Four in ten West Islip homes still heat with oil, and that shapes how many of them make their hot water. See our West Islip page and the general water heater repair and installation page.

When the boiler makes the hot water

The Census Bureau's latest survey shows 41% of West Islip homes heating with fuel oil and 53% with utility gas. In many oil-heated houses, there's no separate water heater at all: the boiler heats domestic water through a coil or a tank connected to it. When a family switches to gas, the hot water usually moves to its own gas tank heater, with new gas piping and its own vent. National Grid's Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743. We install the gas water heater and run the gas line. We don't service oil burners or boilers, and we don't sell or deliver oil.

Big houses, busy mornings

The survey puts the median West Islip home at 7.3 rooms, with 48% having four or more bedrooms, and the average owner household at 3.14 people. Houses that size often have two or three full bathrooms, sometimes at opposite ends of the house. If a far shower takes a long time to run hot, the distance is often the cause, not the tank. If everyone runs out of hot water mid-morning, we check for sediment and a failed dip tube before sizing up.

Area 1 water: soft, acidic, iron-bearing

The Suffolk County Water Authority puts West Islip in its Distribution Area 1. SCWA says the groundwater there is naturally acidic, pH 4.5 to 6.8, and it adds lime to raise it. Its 2026 report shows Area 1 water soft, averaging about 37 mg/L of hardness, but carrying iron that averaged 218 micrograms per liter and sometimes topped New York's 300 standard. Heating drops some of that iron into the bottom of the tank. If only the hot water runs rusty, flush the heater; if both sides do, call SCWA at (631) 698-9500.

Basements near the bay

Our overlay of FEMA's flood map puts about 8% of the hamlet's area in the high-risk zone, along the canals at the south end. A heater that has sat in salt water should stay off until it's checked, and usually has to be replaced. In those basements, we can set the replacement on a stand if the vent and gas line allow.

Repair or replace?

A heater that won't light, or loses heat, often needs a thermocouple, a gas valve or an element. A tank that's leaking from the body needs to be replaced. We tell you which before any work starts.

Questions

Water heaters in West Islip: FAQ

We have no water heater, just a boiler. Is that normal?
Yes, in many oil-heated houses the boiler makes the hot water. If you switch to gas heat, you'll usually add a separate gas water heater.
Only our hot water is rusty. What's wrong?
Usually iron that settled in the tank from SCWA's Area 1 water. Flush it.
Our back bedroom shower takes forever to get hot. Do we need a bigger tank?
Probably not. It's usually the length of the pipe run. We check before recommending a bigger heater.
