A slow main in West Islip can mean something different on one street than on the next, because part of the hamlet is sewered and part isn't. See our West Islip page and the general drain cleaning page.

Two kinds of main line

By our overlay of the county's sewer-district map on the Census boundary, about 73% of West Islip's area is in Suffolk County Sewer District 3, and the rest, mostly at the south end by the bay and a strip at the north, isn't. In a sewered house, the main runs from the foundation to the county connection at the street. In a cesspool house, it runs to a system on your own lot, usually in the backyard or side yard. We clear both, but what the result means is different:

  • Sewer house: if the line clears and stays clear, you're done. If roots or a repeat clog come back, the pipe needs repair.
  • Cesspool house: if the line clears but water still stands in it, the system can't take the water anymore. That part is a job for a cesspool contractor; we don't do cesspool work.

Houses from the 1950s and 1960s

The Census Bureau's latest survey counts 39% of homes built in the 1950s and 26% in the 1960s, so most mains are 55 to 75 years old. Original cast-iron stacks and branches narrow with scale, and clay sections let roots in at the joints. Several fixtures slowing down at once is the sign the main, not a single sink, is the problem.

Many bathrooms, one main

West Islip houses are large: the survey shows a median of 7.3 rooms, with 91% of homes having three or more bedrooms and 48% four or more. The average owner household is 3.14 people. More bathrooms mean more places to clog but still only one line out of the house, and a partly blocked main shows first at the lowest fixture, often a basement shower or the laundry.

Laundry and the cesspool

In an unsewered house, a washing machine sends a lot of water to the system in a few minutes, along with lint. A lint trap on the washer discharge keeps fibers out of the line, and spreading loads through the week is easier on an old system.

When the problem isn't yours

If you're on the sewer and a manhole on your street is overflowing, call Suffolk County's Sewer District 3 emergency line, (631) 854-4150. The county says a blockage inside the home is for a plumber to handle.

Questions

Drain cleaning in West Islip: FAQ

The main cleared but the drains are slow again a week later. Why?
On a cesspool house, the system may not be draining. On a sewer house, roots or a broken section may be catching debris. We tell you which from what comes back on the cable.
Does the planned sewer in north West Islip change anything for my drains now?
Not until the connection is built. The county's plan schedules construction to finish in December 2028; until your street is connected, your line still goes to your cesspool.
Our basement shower backs up when the washer drains. What is that?
A partial clog in the main, or a cesspool that's full. Clearing the main first shows which.
