What a West Islip emergency looks like depends a lot on where the house sits: on a canal near the Great South Bay, on the county sewer in the middle of the hamlet, or on a cesspool at the north or south edge. The West Islip page has the background; our emergency plumber page has a general checklist.

The bayfront floods on ordinary storms

The National Weather Service's coastal flood notes record a January 2017 nor'easter that left 1 to 2 feet of water along the West Islip waterfront, with some residents seeing water up to their garages and town crews pumping out flooded streets in West Islip and Bay Shore. By our overlay of FEMA's flood map, about 8% of the hamlet's area is in the high-risk zone, mostly in zone AE, along the canals and creeks at the south end; about a fifth of the area inside the Census boundary is open water. If you're on one of those streets, a storm tide can bring water to the house before any pipe has failed.

First, find out what your drains connect to

Laying the county's sewer-district map over the Census boundary, about 73% of West Islip is in Suffolk County Sewer District 3. The rest, mostly along the bay and a strip at the north end, is on cesspools or septic systems. That changes the call:

  • On the sewer: if only your house is backed up, the blockage is in your line and we clear it. If sewage is coming out of a manhole, call the county's Sewer District 3 emergency line, (631) 854-4150.
  • On a cesspool: stop using water. We clear the line from the house to the system to see whether it's the pipe. If the line is clear and the water won't go down, the cesspool is full or failing, and that's for a cesspool contractor; we don't do cesspool work.

Burst pipes in bigger houses

The Census Bureau's latest survey puts West Islip's median at 7.3 rooms, with 48% of homes having four or more bedrooms. In a big house, a split pipe in a far bathroom or over a finished ceiling can run for a while before anyone notices. Know where the main shutoff is, and if the house has a second floor, know where the supply runs.

Water heaters and the tide

If a basement took on water in a storm, keep the water heater and any gas appliance off until they're checked. Salt water ruins burners and gas valves.

Who to call

  • Inside the house, the line to the street or cesspool, water heaters: us, at (516) 360-9493.
  • Leak at the curb or in the street: the Suffolk County Water Authority, (631) 698-9500.
  • Sewage from a manhole or a backed-up street: Suffolk County Public Works, Sewer District 3 emergency, (631) 854-4150.
  • Gas smell: leave the house, then call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911.

Questions

Emergency plumber in West Islip: FAQ

How do I know if my house is on the sewer?
Look for a sewer district charge on your tax bill or sewer bill. If there isn't one, you're most likely on a cesspool or septic system.
Water is up to the garage after a storm. Is the plumbing damaged?
Maybe not, but stay out of a flooded basement with live power, and keep the water heater off until it's checked.
The cesspool is backing up into the basement. Can you help?
We clear the line from the house to the system to find out whether it's the pipe. If the system itself is full or failing, that's for a cesspool contractor.
