A Uniondale water heater is usually doing one of two jobs: keeping up with a big family in a 1950s house, or sitting in a closet in a newer townhouse or apartment. See also our Uniondale page and water heater repair and installation.
A lot of showers
The Census Bureau's latest survey puts the average owner household at 3.59 people, with a median of 6.1 rooms per home. A tank that was fine for two or three people runs short with four or five. Before suggesting a bigger tank, we check the one you have: sediment in the bottom and a broken dip tube both cut the usable hot water, and both are fixable.
Closet heaters
12% of Uniondale homes heat with electricity, by the survey, and 21% were built in 2000 or later, many as townhouses and apartments. In those homes the heater, often electric, sits in a closet beside finished rooms. A failed tank there soaks floors and walls instead of a basement drain. A drain pan piped somewhere safe, a relief-valve line that ends where it should, and a shutoff you can reach are worth checking on any tank older than about ten years.
Gas houses and oil houses
The survey shows 64% of homes heating with gas and 22% with oil. Gas houses usually have a gas tank venting into a chimney or flue; a replacement has to vent properly. In oil-heated houses, the boiler often makes the hot water too, and switching to gas usually adds a separate gas water heater and gas piping. National Grid's Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743. We install the heater and the gas line. We don't repair oil boilers, and we don't sell or deliver oil.
The water going in
Most of Uniondale is on the Uniondale Water District, run by the Town of Hempstead. The Town's 2025 report says the pumped water is naturally acidic, so the Town adds lime to reduce corrosion of mains and household plumbing. Even with treatment, sediment settles in a tank over the years. Flushing once a year keeps it from building up. If your hot water smells like rotten eggs, the tank's anode rod is often reacting with the water; replacing the rod and flushing the tank usually clears it.
Repair or replace
A leaking tank needs replacing. A heater that won't light, won't stay lit, or trips its breaker usually needs a part: a thermocouple or flame sensor, a gas control, an element or a thermostat. We tell you which, and what it costs before we start.
