More than half of East Meadow still heats with oil, so the water heater question here is often "do we need one at all?" See also our East Meadow page and water heater repair and installation.

Oil boilers that make hot water

The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey shows 53% of East Meadow homes heating with fuel oil and 35% with utility gas. In many oil-heated houses, the domestic hot water comes from a coil inside the boiler or from an indirect tank the boiler heats. When the boiler is down, so is the hot water, and in summer the boiler runs just to make it. When a house converts from oil to gas, that usually means a separate gas water heater and new gas piping to it. We install the water heater and the gas line. We don't repair oil boilers, and we don't sell or deliver oil.

Gas service for the conversion

National Grid supplies natural gas on Long Island. Its Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743, weekdays, for a new gas service or a larger meter. From the meter to the water heater, range and dryer, the piping is ours, with a Town of Hempstead permit.

Sized for the household

The survey puts the average East Meadow owner household at 3.11 people, counts 79% of homes with three or more bedrooms and 35% with four or more, and a median of 6.4 rooms. Many 1950s capes and ranches have since added a second bathroom. We size a new tank to the people and the bathrooms, not to the label on the old one.

What the town's water does to a tank

Most of East Meadow drinks water from the East Meadow Water District, run by the Town of Hempstead Department of Water. Its wells draw from the Magothy aquifer, and the water is naturally acidic, so the town adds lime to reduce corrosion. At three sites it adds a polyphosphate to prevent rusty water, and it flushes hydrants each year to clear iron that settles in the mains. The department says construction starts in 2026 on treatment with iron removal at two of its wells. Iron and sediment that reach your house settle in the bottom of the tank, which is why flushing a tank now and then helps it last.

Where the heater sits

Most East Meadow houses have basements, where a leaking tank can soak finished space before anyone notices. A drain pan piped to a floor drain, and a relief-valve line that ends where it should, are worth checking on any heater over ten years old.

Questions

Water heaters in East Meadow: FAQ

Our hot water comes from the oil boiler. Do we need a water heater if we switch to gas?
Usually yes. The new gas boiler or furnace may not make domestic hot water, so most conversions add a separate gas water heater. We install it and run the gas line.
The water heater is leaking from the bottom. Can it be fixed?
A leak from the tank itself means the tank has rusted through, and it needs replacing. A leak from a fitting, valve or relief line can often be repaired. Shut the cold supply to the heater and call (631) 644-2084.
Why is our hot water brown after the town flushed the hydrants?
Flushing stirs up iron in the mains, and some reaches your tank. Run cold water until it clears; if only the hot stays brown, the tank needs flushing.
