Uniondale's street sewers are run by Nassau County. The line from each house to the street is the owner's, and in the older half of the hamlet it's often original. See also our Uniondale page and sewer line repair and hookups.

Who's responsible

The Nassau County Department of Health lists the county's Department of Public Works as Uniondale's sewer authority. The main in the street is the county's. The building sewer, from your foundation to the main, belongs to the property. In an apartment complex or townhouse development, the private lines inside the property usually belong to the owner or association, not to individual units. For a backup in the street, Nassau County Public Works lists a 24-hour line, (516) 571-6900, and a SUEZ hotline for sewer issues, 866-224-8508.

The older half of town

Half of Uniondale's homes were built in the 1940s and 1950s, by the Census Bureau's latest survey, and 11% before 1940. House sewers from that era were typically clay tile or cast iron. After 70 years, clay joints take in roots and cast iron rusts thin along the bottom. A heavy household speeds up the wear: the survey's average owner household is 3.59 people.

Signs it's the pipe

  • The main backs up again within weeks of being cleared.
  • Roots come back on the cable.
  • A sewer smell in the yard, or a soft, sunken strip over the line.
  • Gurgling at the basement drain when upstairs fixtures run.

Apartment complexes

By the same survey, about 17% of Uniondale's homes are in buildings of 10 or more units, and 30% of households rent. In those buildings, the drains that leave each apartment join a building line that management maintains, and a backup on several floors at once is a building problem. If only your unit backs up, tell the building and call us; we clear the line that serves your unit.

Repair or replace

We clear the line, then find the problem and how deep it is. A single broken joint can often be dug and replaced. A line that has failed in several places should be replaced from the house to the county connection. Uniondale is an unincorporated hamlet, so the permit comes from the Town of Hempstead Building Department; work at the county connection goes through Nassau County Public Works, which lists a sewer permits line at (516) 571-6840.

Low flood risk

Our overlay of FEMA's flood map puts only about 1% of Uniondale in the high-risk flood zone. Sewer problems here are almost always the pipe itself, not storm surge.

Questions

Sewer line repair in Uniondale: FAQ

The street was dug up for sewer work last year. Did that replace my line?
Usually not. County work covers the main. Your line from the house to the main stays yours unless the work order says otherwise.
How deep is a typical sewer line here?
It varies with the street and the house. We measure it before quoting any digging.
We're in a townhouse. Is the sewer line ours?
Usually the association's, for lines shared by several units. Check your HOA documents. We fix lines that serve your unit only.
