Very soft water, with iron

The village Water Department's 2025 report shows total hardness of 3.1 to 30.7 mg/L, which is very soft, so the heavy scale that builds up in hard-water towns isn't the main concern. Iron is: the report says the village's water meets every standard except iron. The village has built a second iron removal facility and adds a polyphosphate to keep iron in suspension. Even so, when water is heated, some iron can settle in the bottom of the tank. Brown hot water with clear cold water usually means that sediment, and flushing the tank once a year helps. The village draws all of its water from 10 wells in the Magothy aquifer, pumping about 1.3 billion gallons in 2025.

Gas heaters and old chimneys

The Census Bureau's latest survey shows 69% of homes heating with gas and 18% with oil. In the village's many pre-war houses (44% were built before 1940), a gas water heater often vents into an old masonry chimney, sometimes shared with the boiler. A new heater has to vent properly into that chimney, or the chimney may need a liner. We check the venting and the gas connection on every gas replacement.

Electric heaters on village power

11% of homes heat with electricity, by the same survey, and an electric water heater is a common choice where there's no gas line or no chimney to vent into. Rockville Centre supplies its own electricity through a village Electric Department. If an electric heater stops working, we check the breaker, elements and thermostats first. If the problem is the power supply itself, the department's emergency and outage line is (516) 766-5800.

Apartments and co-ops

31% of the village's homes are in buildings of five or more units. In some of those buildings, hot water comes from a central boiler that belongs to the building; in others, each unit has its own heater. Where your unit has its own heater, it's usually in a closet next to finished floors, so a drain pan and a relief-valve line that ends in a safe place matter. We replace in-unit heaters; central systems are management's.

Saving hot water

The village's report notes that a half load in a dishwasher or washer uses as much water as a full one, and you pay to heat it. The Water Department gives out free water conservation kits.

Questions

Water heaters in Rockville Centre: FAQ

Our hot water is brown but the cold is fine. Why?
Usually iron that settled in the tank. Flush it. If cold water is discolored too, call the Water Department at (516) 678-9301.
Our electric water heater stopped. Is it the power?
Check the breaker first. If the house has power but the heater doesn't heat, it's usually an element or thermostat, which we replace. For an outage, call the village Electric Department.
Our gas heater vents into an old chimney. Can a new one use it?
Often, but an old masonry chimney may need a liner. We check before installing.
