Rockville Centre is one of six Nassau villages that still run their own sewer collection systems. See our Rockville Centre page and the general sewer line repair page.

A village system since the 1920s

The Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection's 2020 report lists Rockville Centre among the early Nassau communities with their own sewage treatment, opened in 1928. Today the village is one of six whose own collection systems discharge into the county system for treatment, along with Freeport, Garden City, Hempstead, Mineola and Roslyn. The village's annual report describes a Sewer Department within Public Works that keeps the sewers flowing and the catch basins clear. Public Works is at 10 Sunrise Highway, (516) 678-9288.

Your share of the pipe

The village maintains the sewer in the street; the lateral from your foundation to it is yours. With 44% of the village's homes built before 1940, by the Census Bureau's latest survey, many laterals are clay pipe or cast iron that has been in the ground for 85 years or more. What tends to fail:

  • Clay joints that let roots in, so the line clogs every year or two.
  • Cracked or broken sections, often under a driveway or near a large tree.
  • Cast iron that has corroded through along the bottom of the pipe.
  • Old connections to the street that have settled out of line.

We clear the line first and look at what comes back. Repeated roots, pieces of clay or a clog that keeps returning at the same spot mean we need to dig and repair that section, or replace the run if it's failing in several places.

Village permits

Because Rockville Centre is an incorporated village, plumbing permits come from the village Building Department at 110 Maple Avenue, (516) 678-9247, not the Town of Hempstead. We pull the permit the job needs and schedule the inspection, so the repair is on record with the village.

Near the Mill River

Our overlay of FEMA's flood map puts about 3% of the village in the high-risk flood zone, and Patch reported the Mill River flooding at least 16 homes on Riverside Drive in Sandy. For houses in that low ground, a backwater (sewer check) valve on the house sewer can close if the street sewer backs up, keeping sewage from coming in through a basement floor drain. It needs a cleanout for access and an occasional check. For most of the village, which sits outside the flood zone, the work is about old pipe, not backflow.

Questions

Sewer line repair in Rockville Centre: FAQ

Who do I call if the sewer in the street is backed up?
The village's Public Works department, (516) 678-9288. If only your house is backed up, call us at (516) 360-9493.
Is the sewer line under the sidewalk ours or the village's?
The lateral from your house to the village sewer is generally the owner's. The main in the street is the village's.
Our house is near the Mill River. Do we need a backwater valve?
If your basement has a floor drain below street level and the street has flooded before, it's worth considering. We check the layout first.
