Rockville Centre runs its own water, electric and sewer systems, so knowing which village department to call is half of handling an emergency here. The Rockville Centre page has the full background, and our emergency plumber page has a general checklist.

The village is your utility

The village's department list gives separate numbers for each system:

  • Water Department, behind the police station at 142 Maple Avenue: (516) 678-9301. A leak at the curb, the meter or in the street is theirs.
  • Electric Department emergencies and outages: (516) 766-5800. The village, not a private company, supplies electricity here, so a power problem affecting an electric water heater or a sump pump goes to them.
  • Public Works, 10 Sunrise Highway: (516) 678-9288, weekdays 8 to 4. The village's annual report says Public Works runs the Sewer Department along with highways and sanitation, so a backed-up street sewer goes to them.
  • Gas: National Grid, 1-800-490-0045, or 911 if you smell gas. Leave the house first.

Anything inside the house, including the drain line to the street, is ours: (516) 360-9493.

Pre-war plumbing gives out without warning

The Census Bureau's latest survey counts 44% of the village's homes built before 1940, with a median year built of 1945. A house that old may still have galvanized steel supply pipe, which rusts from the inside and tends to let go at a threaded fitting, or a cast-iron drain that cracks along the bottom. Know where the main shutoff is, usually where the service enters at the front of the basement. If the valve is seized or won't close fully, call the Water Department; the curb valve is theirs to operate. Then open a faucet on the lowest floor to drain the pipes and take pressure off the leak.

Co-ops and apartment buildings

The same survey shows 31% of homes in buildings with five or more units, most of them buildings of 20 or more. In those buildings, the risers, stacks and boilers are the building's. If water is coming through your ceiling from the unit above, call the super or management first so they can shut the riser. Inside your own unit, a failed supply line under a sink, a toilet fill valve or a dishwasher hose is something we can fix.

When the Mill River comes up

Patch reported that the Mill River flooded at least 16 homes on Riverside Drive in Sandy. Our overlay of FEMA's flood map puts only about 3% of the village in the high-risk flood zone, but for those houses, a basement full of water means the water heater and any gas appliance stay off until they're checked.
