Nearly four in ten Huntington Station homes still heat with oil, and the water from the local district is soft. Both matter when you're choosing or fixing a water heater here. See also our Huntington Station page and water heater repair and installation.

Oil houses and hot water

The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey shows 49% of Huntington Station homes heating with utility gas, 38% with fuel oil and 9% with electricity. In many oil houses, the boiler also makes the domestic hot water. When the boiler quits, so does the hot water. Converting from oil to gas usually means a separate gas water heater and new gas piping to it, often to the range and dryer too. National Grid's Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743, weekdays. We do the water heater and the gas piping. We don't repair oil boilers, and we don't sell or deliver oil.

Gas piping is not a homeowner job here

The Town of Huntington's plumbing code requires a town permit to install, repair or modify plumbing or gas piping. Owners of one- and two-family homes may do their own plumbing, but the code doesn't let them do their own gas piping. A gas water heater swap involves the gas line, so plan on a permit.

Soft water, low iron

Most of the hamlet is on the South Huntington Water District, which pumps from 18 wells and keeps seven storage tanks. Its 2025 report shows total hardness of 2.7 to 54.6 mg/L, which is soft, and iron of no more than 0.062 mg/L, well under the 0.3 standard. The district adds sodium hydroxide to cut corrosion of household plumbing. Soft, low-iron water leaves little scale in a tank, but it can use up the tank's anode rod faster, so checking the rod on an older heater is worth doing. If your bill comes from SCWA or the Greenlawn Water District instead, your water report will differ.

Sized for the house

The survey puts the average owner household at 3.12 people, counts 69% of homes with three or more bedrooms and 26% with four or more, and a median of 6.0 rooms. 12% of homes are townhouses. We size a new tank to the people and the bathrooms. In a townhouse, we also look at the closet the heater sits in and where its relief valve drains.

On a cesspool

Most of Huntington Station drains to cesspools today. A water heater's relief-valve or pan line that's piped to a drain ends up there too, so a heater that keeps discharging water adds load to the cesspool. Fix it rather than ignore it.

Questions

Water heaters in Huntington Station: FAQ

We're switching from oil to gas. What do we need for hot water?
Usually a separate gas water heater and gas piping to it. We install both, with the Town of Huntington permit.
Can I replace my own gas water heater?
The town code lets owners of one- and two-family homes do their own plumbing, but not gas piping, so a gas heater swap needs a plumber.
Does soft water hurt a water heater?
It leaves less scale, but it can wear out the anode rod sooner. We check the rod and the tank before recommending a replacement.
