For most of its history Huntington Station has had almost no sewers. That's starting to change around the train station and along New York Avenue. See also our Huntington Station page and sewer line repair and hookups across Long Island.
Today: about 5% sewered
Suffolk County's sewer-district map, laid over the Census boundary, puts only about 5% of the hamlet's area inside an active sewer district, a corner of the Town of Huntington's own district. The same map shows a proposed Huntington Station district covering about 2% more. Everything else drains to cesspools or septic systems.
The new zone
Suffolk County and the Town of Huntington are extending Suffolk County Sewer District No. 3 (Southwest) into a "Huntington Station Hub" zone of about 229 parcels. A 2024 county resolution funds it with federal relief money and state grants, and the town says construction started in summer 2025. Local reports say the zone runs along New York Avenue from the station to East 15th Street, plus parts of Depot Road, that sewage will go to the Bergen Point plant in Babylon, that connections should begin in 2028, and that connecting will be mandatory after a year.
What a hookup involves
- A new house sewer from the building to the street connection. On many lots the waste line leaves the house toward the cesspool in the back or side yard, so it has to be rerouted toward the street. We do this part.
- Inside the house, the drain may need to exit through a different wall, and some houses need a pump if fixtures sit below the street sewer. We check elevations before we start.
- The old cesspool, which local reports say has to be abandoned when you connect. That's cesspool work, which we don't do, so plan on a separate contractor for that part.
- A Town of Huntington permit. The town plumbing code requires one to install, repair or modify plumbing. Owners of one- and two-family homes may do their own plumbing, but not gas piping.
Repairs on lines that already exist
Outside the zone, the line from the house to the cesspool can still crack, sag or fill with roots. 48% of the hamlet's homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, according to the Census Bureau's latest survey, and their original clay and cast-iron lines are now 55 to 75 years old. If the line keeps clogging after clearing, we locate the bad section and repair or replace it, up to the cesspool. The cesspool itself is a job for others.
Not a flood area
Our overlay of FEMA's flood map puts none of the hamlet in the high-risk flood zone, so storm-tide sewer backups aren't the concern here. Once the new zone is running, a backup in a connected house will be either the house line or the district main.
