East Meadow takes its name from the meadow of the Hempstead Plains east of the Meadow Brook, a stream that has since been replaced by the parkway of the same name, according to Wikipedia. Almost all of that meadow became house lots after World War II. See also our East Meadow page and drain cleaning across Long Island.

Drains from one building boom

The Census Bureau's latest survey counts about 12,200 homes in East Meadow, 81% single-family detached and 89% owner-occupied. 54% were built in the 1950s. That's the highest single-decade share of any town we've written about, so the drain picture is unusually uniform: cast-iron stacks and branches inside, and a cast-iron or clay house sewer running out to the street, most of it about 70 years old.

How a clog shows up in an East Meadow house

  • The basement floor drain or laundry tub overflows when the washer empties. That's a main-line restriction, not a laundry problem.
  • Toilets gurgle when a tub drains. Air is being pulled through a partly blocked line.
  • One slow fixture is a branch clog. We clear it at the fixture or the branch, not by pulling up the main.

Who's on the line

The survey puts the average East Meadow household at 3.02 people and counts 79% of homes with three or more bedrooms, a median of 6.4 rooms. A full family's laundry, dishes and showers run through a main sized for the 1950s. Lint, grease and wipes are what usually close it, and roots finish the job where a clay joint has opened.

Sewer, not cesspool

Nassau County's health department lists the county's Department of Public Works as East Meadow's sewer authority. So a backup is your line or the county main, not a full cesspool. If neighbors are backing up too, call the county's 24-hour sewer service line, (516) 571-6900. If it's only you, call us.

Water notes that matter for drains

The Town of Hempstead Department of Water adds lime to its naturally acidic well water to reduce corrosion, and at three sites it adds a polyphosphate to prevent rusty water. It also flushes hydrants every year to clear iron that settles in the mains. Stained fixtures after flushing in the street are usually that, not your drains. The department's own conservation tips include a toilet dye test: a few drops of food coloring in the tank, and if color shows in the bowl, the flapper is leaking.

When clearing isn't enough

If the main clogs again within weeks, or the cable comes back with roots, the line itself is cracked or has open joints. See sewer line repair in East Meadow.

Questions

Drain cleaning in East Meadow: FAQ

Our basement floor drain backs up when the washer drains. Why?
The main line is partly blocked, and the floor drain is the lowest opening in the house. We clear the main from the cleanout.
Is East Meadow on sewers or cesspools?
Sewers. Nassau County's Department of Public Works is listed as the local sewer authority.
Our toilet keeps running. Is that a drain problem?
No, it's usually the flapper. The Town of Hempstead's dye test (food coloring in the tank) shows it. We replace flappers and fill valves too.
