How long a water heater lasts in Plainview depends partly on which of the district's wells feeds your street. Read more on our Plainview page and our water heater repair and installation page.

Water that changes from well to well

The Plainview Water District's 2025 report lists total hardness from 10.3 to 180 mg/L across its wells, and calcium hardness from 5.6 to 167. At the low end that's soft water; at the high end it's hard. The district adjusts pH upward with lime, and its continuous field pH readings ranged from 4.4 to 8.3. Total dissolved solids ranged from 27 to 274 mg/L. In practical terms, two neighbors can have very different experiences: one heater lasts with little buildup, while another, on harder water, collects scale on the bottom of the tank or on electric elements and starts to rumble. If yours pops or crackles while heating, sediment is the usual reason, and a flush helps.

Copper and corrosion

The same report says the district tested 32 homes for lead and copper in 2023, and the 90th-percentile copper result was 0.20 mg/L, well under the 1.3 action level. The state's lead service line inventory for the district lists all 10,743 service lines as known, with none lead or galvanized. That's good news for the pipes feeding your heater; the usual wear points are the tank itself and its own connections: the dielectric fittings, the shutoff and the relief valve.

Oil houses switching to gas

The Census Bureau's latest survey shows 32% of Plainview homes heating with fuel oil. In those houses, the boiler often makes the domestic hot water. When the owners switch to gas, the hot water usually moves to a new gas tank heater with its own gas line and vent. National Grid's Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743. We install the heater and the gas piping. We don't service oil burners, and we don't sell or deliver oil.

Sizing after remodels

The survey puts the median home at 7.0 rooms, with an average owner household of 3.00 people. Many Plainview houses gained a bathroom since the 1950s, and the heater that served one bath now serves two or three. Before we upsize, we check for sediment and a failed dip tube; if the tank is healthy and still runs out, we size the replacement to the bathrooms and the people.

Saving on hot water

The district's report points out that using less water also lowers energy bills because of the hot water. A leaking hot-water faucet, or a relief valve that drips, wastes both.

Questions

Water heaters in Plainview: FAQ

Our heater rumbles, but our neighbor's doesn't. Why?
Hardness varies by well, from 10 to 180 mg/L in the district's report. Harder water leaves more scale. Flushing helps.
Is our water service line lead?
The district's state-filed inventory lists none of its 10,743 lines as lead or galvanized. You can call the district at (516) 931-6469 with questions.
We're converting from oil. Do we need a new water heater?
Usually, if the boiler made your hot water. A separate gas tank heater with its own gas line is the common setup.
