Plainview's houses connect to the Nassau County sewer, and most of their connecting pipes are as old as the houses. See our Plainview page and our general sewer line repair page.

A big system, a short pipe of your own

The Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection's 2020 report describes the county's system: about 3,000 miles of sanitary sewer from 8 to 108 inches across, 64,000 manholes, 57 pump stations and roughly 300,000 individual service connections. Your house is one of those connections. The main in the street and everything downstream belong to the county; the lateral from your foundation to that main is yours to maintain, and on a typical Plainview lot it runs under the front lawn, a walk or the driveway.

Why Plainview laterals fail now

The Census Bureau's latest survey counts 64% of homes built in the 1950s. Laterals from that era were usually clay pipe or cast iron. What we find after 70 years:

  • Root intrusion at clay joints, from trees and shrubs that have had 70 years to spread their roots.
  • Offset joints, where one section has shifted and catches paper.
  • Cracks under driveways that were widened or repaved over the decades.
  • Cast iron worn through along the bottom, the part that carries water every day.

We clear the line first. If the cleaning shows a break, an offset or roots that keep coming back, we excavate and repair the bad section or replace the run.

Before you replace

Not every repeat clog means a new line. If roots are getting in at one joint, a section repair can end it. If the pipe is broken in several places, or flattened under a driveway, replacement is the better value. We tell you what we found and where, and we don't recommend a full replacement unless the pipe calls for it.

Permits and the street

Work on the connection itself involves the county; Nassau County Public Works lists a sewer permits number, (516) 571-6840. Plainview is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits for work on the house side go through the Town of Oyster Bay. If the backup is in the county main, not your line, call the county's 24-hour sewer service line, (516) 571-6900.

Inland, not tidal

Plainview is in central Nassau, miles from the South Shore bays, so the tide-driven sewer backups that South Shore towns deal with aren't the issue here. What wears out a lateral here is age, roots and shifting soil, so the work is about finding the failed section and fixing it.

Questions

Sewer line repair in Plainview: FAQ

How do I know if the problem is my lateral or the county main?
If only your house backs up, it's almost always your lateral. If several houses on the street back up at once, call the county.
Our lateral runs under the driveway. Does the driveway have to come up?
Only the part over the bad section, if that's where the break is. We locate the problem before digging.
Can roots be cleared and left alone?
For a while. They grow back at the same joint, usually within a year or two. Repairing that joint ends the cycle.
