Plainview isn't a flood town. Its emergencies come from cold snaps and from plumbing that was installed all at once in the 1950s and is now wearing out on roughly the same schedule. Background is on our Plainview page; our emergency plumber page has a general checklist.
After a hard freeze
The Plainview Water District's spring 2026 newsletter says the record cold of the 2025–26 winter, with repeated freeze-thaw cycles, caused nearly 60 water main breaks across the district, and that its crews stayed on call around the clock to fix them. The same weather finds the weak spots inside houses: a supply line in an unheated garage, a hose bib whose inside valve was left open, pipes run along an outside wall behind a kitchen sink. A frozen pipe often doesn't leak until it thaws, so a split can show up a day after the cold breaks.
First steps when water is pouring
1. Close the main shutoff, usually just inside the foundation where the service line enters, near the meter. 2. Turn off the water heater (gas to "pilot" or "off," or the breaker for an electric unit) if the leak is near it or the house supply is off for long. 3. Open a faucet on the lowest floor to drain what's left in the pipes. 4. Call us at (516) 360-9493. If water is coming up through the street or the curb box, that's the district's, not yours: call the Plainview Water District at (516) 931-6469.
Sewage backing up
The Census Bureau's latest survey counts 64% of Plainview homes built in the 1950s, so most main drains have had about 70 years to collect roots and scale. When a backup reaches the basement floor drain or lowest toilet, stop using water everywhere in the house. If it's only your house, the blockage is almost always in your own line, and we clear it from the cleanout. If neighbors are backed up too, the problem is in the county sewer. Nassau County Public Works lists a 24-hour sewer service line, (516) 571-6900, and a SUEZ hotline for sewer issues, 866-224-8508.
Bigger houses, longer runs
The same survey puts Plainview's median at 7.0 rooms, with 89% of homes having three or more bedrooms. Many ranches and split-levels have had a bathroom or a kitchen expansion added since they were built, sometimes with piping run through crawl spaces and garages that weren't designed for it. Those added runs are where we most often find freeze damage.
