Not every drain that backs up in Merrick is a clog. Near the bays, some of it is the tide. See our Merrick page and the general drain cleaning page.
Two separate systems
Merrick has two kinds of drains under its streets. Storm drains take rain off the roads and discharge it into the canals and bays. The sanitary sewer takes what goes down your sinks and toilets to the county's treatment plant. The state's NY Rising plan for Bellmore and Merrick counts about 230 storm-drain outfalls along the shoreline, most without tidal check valves, and calls for installing them on 25 critical outfalls. When the tide is high, water can back up through those storm drains onto the street. That's not your plumbing. When water or sewage rises through a floor drain or a toilet inside, that is, and it's usually a blocked house line or an overloaded sewer.
1950s mains on filled ground
The plan says many Merrick homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s on land made by filling marsh along the bay. The Census Bureau's latest survey counts 32% of homes built in the 1950s and 21% in the 1960s, with 20% older still. A clay or cast-iron main laid in filled ground can settle unevenly over the decades. A low spot holds water and lets paper and grease collect, so the main clogs at the same distance from the cleanout again and again. When we see that pattern, we tell you, because no amount of cleaning fixes a sag.
Many bathrooms, one way out
The same survey shows Merrick homes are large: a median of 7.5 rooms, with 90% having three or more bedrooms and 55% four or more. More bathrooms don't add more mains; everything still leaves through one line. A basement bathroom or laundry is usually the first to show a partial blockage. If it backs up when the upstairs shower runs, the main is the place to clear.
How we clear it
For a single slow fixture, we work from the fixture. For a backup at the lowest drain, we go in from the main cleanout and bring the cable back so you can see what it hit. Grease means the kitchen; roots, broken clay or a repeat clog point to the pipe. Our Merrick sewer line page covers repairs.
When it's the county's
If several houses on your street back up together, or a manhole is overflowing, the problem is in the county's system. Nassau County Public Works lists a 24-hour sewer service line, (516) 571-6900.
